A look back in The Press notes 50 years ago this week Jas M Williams & Co of Charlottesville announced a new saw mill at Aquone with monthly capacity of 300 000 to 400 000 feet. The dam and boom were built behind the Munday storehouse. Mills would sit across the river, lumberyards on this side. Commissions were issued by the North Carolina governor to state delegates to an International gold convention in Denver. Dr H Lyle was among thirty from the state. 25 years ago mentions include Z W Angel Jr returning from UNC, John Crawford and son Will visiting, and Miss Margaret Adelaide McGuire marrying John Warner Cooper. Mrs Henry Slagle received pea fowls from her son Dr Dick Slagle in Puerto Rico. Methodists Plan Vacation School Opening Monday
The Franklin Methodist church will host its annual vacation church school from Monday to Friday, with sessions 3 to 11 am except Saturday and Sunday. A registration session is Saturday at 10 am with refreshments. Director is Mrs. Pearl Hunter, aided by staff including Miss Frances Farr, Miss Carolyn Long, and multiple teachers and volunteers.

Dupree Named Town Clerk At Highlands RN
Dupree selected by Highlands board of commissioners to succeed Virginia P Merrill as town clerk. Sworn in by Mayor James O Beale Monday afternoon, he assumes duties immediately. Merrill plans an extended trip through the northwestern United States and Canada. Dupree holds a temporary appointment while he and his wife plan to teach in Highlands schools next year.

Macon County students were among the graduates in recent exercises at several institutions. Four county natives earned B S degrees from North Carolina State College Raleigh in animal industry and agricultural engineering. Robert Sloan earned a B A from the University of North Carolina and a public health nursing certificate. Laura Slagle and Frankie Horsley received B S degrees from Wake Forest College in last week’s exercises. Mildred Reid graduated from Meredith College. Harold Kimsey, son of Mr and Mrs George Kimsey of Franklin, is at Angel clinic with a fractured skull after a hay rake incident when a horse ran away. He was thrown down as the rake passed over him. The report notes the local Great Plains Young People's Singing Convention at the courthouse Sunday at 1 PM with the Rev Theron Slagle presiding and invites young singers.

Planned union services by Methodist and Presbyterian churches
Plans for a Sunday evening union service series were agreed at a meeting at the Presbyterian church. Services will begin July 6 at 8 p.m. alternating between churches each week with guest ministers when available. Music will be a joint effort of both choirs and 10 ushers will assist each service.

Miss Wells to Retire After 41 Years in North Carolina Schools
Miss Isabelle Wells, longtime educator and former principal of the Hotta High School, will retire after 41 years in North Carolina schools. A native of Shortott, she served as Johnston County rural schools supervisor and plans a summer return to her mountain home, then retirement in her cottage at Smithfield.

Motorcycle Crash Kills Medlin Veteran Driver
Dewey Medlin, 26, a World War II veteran who served in Europe driving trucks and supplying engineers, died after his motorcycle collided with an automobile on Cowee mountain. The Belmont man, raised in Swain county, was fatally hurt and died at Angel hospital. He leaves parents and seven sisters. Funeral services were held Monday in Bryson City. Police noted Medlin appeared to lose control on a curve. Other riders were injured lightly. In other notes, water shortages prompt officials to urge conservation as reservoir levels stay low and firefighting risk rises. Mayor Angel and the aldermen sought state help for water and fire protection.

Franklin alderman resigns over move outside town limits
J. W. Fagg resigns from the Franklin board of aldermen after moving outside town boundaries. The town plans emergency water measures by purchasing two government surplus mobile filtering units to treat creek or Tennessee River water, doubling current capacity to about 150 gallons per minute. Units, mounted on GMC trucks, cost about 4 185.80 each with slight additional costs, storage in Richmond, Va., and potential delivery next week.
