Mex Barrington was appointed chairman of the unexpired term of Mrs Charles Melichar who had served as Red Cross chair in Macon. The executive committee approved at the meeting last Monday night. Barrington, who had served many years as Red Cross chairman, resigned to take the public role.

Explosion At Mine Near Franklin Kills One Injures Two
A mine near Franklin four miles from town on the Didsboro highway exploded at about 6 o clock injuring two workers. Jim Penland died at the Franklin clinic from a broken jaw and internal injuries. James Buchanan suffered a broken leg and other injuries and was in serious condition. Both men from Spruce Pine had been part of the county project. Eight others were on site but unharmed. Witnesses said a dynamite charge in a fine hole detonated earlier than expected.

Budget For OAA And ADC Prepared For County
Macon County Welfare Board and Macon County Commissions held a joint meeting on Tune 71h to prepare the administrative budget for this year. Legislation this year provides 11 appropriations for Old Age Assistance and Aid to Dependent Children with mixed state and federal support. The board requested 290 Old Age Assistance cases averaging $900 monthly and was granted 217 at $800 monthly. They asked for 5 families for ADC with an average grant of $1500 monthly and were granted 5. Presently 218 persons drawing Old Age Assistance indicate no new intake until quotas free. Outlook for Dependent Children cases shows some improvement with only a few families currently drawing.
