In a lengthy session the Franklin board reelected town employees, approved a $10 privilege tax on taxis, and set plans for bidding on fuel and vehicle items. They authorized funds for a third policeman and directed committees to study town services including water and property use by taxi operators. See No. 2, Page 8.
In Western North Carolina a safety area for war refugees is proposed. Officials, including J Richard Queen, dismissed the danger of proximity to Oak Ridge Tennessee, arguing that even in an all-out war Franklin could receive 30,000 refugees.
A 23 year old prisoner serving four years for flute theft at Macon County prison camp fled a road gang around 11 am near the Georgia line. Sheriff Harry Thomas said the escape appeared prearranged, with a man driving away in a car after the escape. The escapee Austin 28 of Gastonia Route 2 was last seen wearing brown pants and a white T shirt, about medium build and 163 pounds.
Lions submit a detailed Franklin map to Aldermen for approval as part of the Community Betterment project to guide door to door mail delivery. The cost estimates compare townwide mapping at about $6,000 with Plemmons’ $250 in spare time work. The board postponed action, and the second phase follows the successful fall 1949 street shading effort. The Macon County Singing convention announces the Buck Creek Baptist church gathering at 1:45 PM.
Tentative plans call for a morning parade and field events, a baseball game at the athletic field in the afternoon, and a square dance at night by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post at the airport.
Diplomas were presented to 40 Highlands seniors by county superintendent G L Houk at Highlands High School commencement. Principal speaker Dr Paul A Reid, president of Western Carolina Teachers College, urged life long education as essential for survival and described it as a powerful spiritual and moral weapon. Simultaneous revivals are planned June 10 to 15 across Franklin County churches with joint services each day and guest preachers.
A Franklin County incident reports an eight year old boy attacked by a sex criminal from Macon County prison camp. The assailant, David Cannon, 27 of Ayden, faced charges and authorities investigated a Donor system breach as local groups draft resolutions. The Reber child described the man promising a white rabbit and regulators examine prisoner freedoms while serving sentences.
Three graduates at Nantahala High received their diplomas Saturday night in the new boot building. The ceremony marked the first class to complete the program, with diplomas awarded amid celebration and community turnout.
Eight seniors received honors as conferred by Guy L. Houk county school superintendent. The record notes the event as part of a baccalaureate or academic recognition, with page reference indicating continuation on page five.
McSwain chosen as Macon County superintendent of schools by 4 to 0 vote at county board meeting. Bryson nominated Houk earlier, but McSwain received board support amid discussion of district personnel and committee changes. McSwain, 47, has Caswell county superintendent experience and Rotary leadership, will assume office July 1.
North Carolina tourism figures released by the state department list Nantahala as the fourth top attraction in 1950 with 1,220,480 visitors. Pisgah National Forest topped the list with 1,601,175, followed by the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Swain county’s Nantahala drama opened in 1950 drew 107,140 attendees and ranked eighth. The Nantahalas cover 47377 acres in Macon County with about 60,000 forest residents, offering hunting, fishing, picnics, and scenic views from Wayah Bald and Nantahala Crest.
The First Baptist church and county Baptists announce a Training Union enlargement drive from Sunday to Friday under pastor Rev. M W Chapman. James P Morgan of the NC Baptist Training Union department will send over 18 field workers to assist county wide efforts conducted by the Macon County Baptist Association. At the First Baptist church Miss Willa Marks will lead both young people and adults, Betty Brewer will instruct intermediates, and Miss Mable Starnes will teach juniors.
