The Macon county school board met for two hours in the courthouse and chose teachers for 1934-35, consolidating Tellico with Oak Grove and routing Nantahala high school pupils to Flats. Principal Guy L. Houk reelected. M. D. Billings kept as county superintendent. three fewer teachers overall. A new bus plan moves Tellico pupils to Oak Grove, and road work fixes Lost Bridge to Tellico access.

Ice cream supper to benefit Clark's Chapel Methodist Church will be held Friday night at Charlie Rogers home Route 1 Franklin. Epworth League of the church sponsors the event.
The Waynesville district of the North Carolina Methodist church met in Bryson City over Sunday and Monday, with delegates from Macon county and eight gathered counties. Rev. L B Hayes presided, Dr. A W Plyte s spoke on Our Heritage marking the 150th anniversary of American Methodism, and Rev C C Herbert led Monday services. Plans for Brevard College opening were announced by Dr E J Contrane, with reports from 28 charges and lunch served by Bryson City women.
RL Mashburn, 22, sustained burns on feet and bruises when a 1927 Chevrolet roadster overturned. Gasoline ignited and passers by rescued him, taking him to Angel hospital. He is expected to recover. The car belonged to Ralph West of Totia.
Miss Ella Jones of Franklin appointed to canvass Macon county for a statewide child welfare survey funded by the North Carolina departments of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary. The effort, started May 25 under Mrs. W. S. Absher, aims to record the status of every disabled child and veteran orphans, identify needy children for relief funds, and coordinate with relief agencies.
The tobacco tax reduction bill was offered in the House Tuesday by Representative Doughton chair of the Ways and Means Committee.
Plan reunion members of the Gibson family will gather Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Setser five miles west of Franklin on highway No. 28. Betsy Jane Grant, aged 9, is honored as the oldest Gibson. Other elders include Mrs. Elizabeth DeHart of Bryson City and Mrs. Margaret Carter of Anderson, plus Mrs. Fannie Dillard of Demorest, Ga. A lawn picnic at noon precedes a family history reading and a price contest.
Asbury Jacob Gibson, 52, of the otla section, died Monday after an operation for brain tumor following a six week illness from stroke paralysis. Funeral services were held at the Iotla Baptist church Tuesday at 11. He belonged to Liberty Baptist Church since birth and is survived by his widow Arabelle Hurst, three daughters Mrs. B. O. Barnes, Mrs. E. M. Barnes, Miss Pearl Gibson, and son Carl Gibson, all of Otla.
Welcome Asheville Inc invites all of Western North Carolina to an all day Fourth of July event at Asheville Memorial Stadium. A patriotic morning parade precedes a speech by a renowned regional orator, as organizers aim to recreate the old fashioned celebration.
Primary over and political unrest lingers as the Macon County Democratic county convention is set to convene Monday afternoon in the courthouse. No pledged candidates for county chair but several names are circulating for a lively contest. Also expected is the nomination of the county school board, with the chair selection and board appointments explained.
RL Fowlkes and his daughter Miss Dot Fowlkes of Atlanta plus John W Miller of Newport News Va were hospitalized at Angel hospital after the automobile they rode in skidded off the road Sunday afternoon about 2 o'clock just south of Otto. Fowlkes and his daughter had internal injuries while Miller sustained no serious injuries.
Union members at Electric Auto-Lite and two subsidiaries ratified a contract Tuesday night after federal mediators forged a settlement ending a prolonged strike.
The Macon county post of the American Legion meets at 8 oclock in the courthouse. Kerr Cunningham announces all war veterans are invited and each member should bring at least one service flag. The entertainment committee has arranged a nice program. A Legion meeting scheduled for last Monday night was postponed.
