Town to file civil suit over zoning violation

The Town of Franklin authorized an institute civil action against Lee Tippett for operating a rock crusher in a residential area in violation of zoning rules. A restraining order is planned to stop the operation. Town officials also re hired water, fire, and police staff on a month to month basis amid other civic actions.

Drag Race Reported On US 64 Near Slagle’s Dairy

Highway Patrolman H T For season said an illegal drag race occurred on US 64 near Slagle’s Dairy. He knows the drivers’ identities but lacks enough evidence to indict them. Patrolman Ferguson noted it was the county’s first organized race, with two late model cars used and spectators in a small crowd.

Auto crash claims lives of Macon sians

A South Skeenah man Porter Thomas and his family were killed in a Sunday midnight crash near Madison Georgia when the car allegedly veered off the road and struck a bridge abutment. Ethel Mae Mot Thomas 40 and their daughter Carole Elizabeth Thomas 3 died at the scene and a hospital in Athens treated others. Kate 6 and Ray 10 were among the injured, with all occupants hospitalized. See No 2 Page 10.

President Engineer Sr. Ung says US 28 441 from Franklin to Sylva will stay open during proposed paving with short delays on the two lane section. Bids approved in Raleigh. state Contractors of Hickory submitted the low bid of 244 305.50 for US 23 441 and part of US 28 10 A. project covers 7.24 miles in this county from Franklin to Cowee Gap, Macon Jackson line.

Tax Rate Increases 1 Cent for Schools in County Plan

The county levy rises one cent per hundred valuation to fund schools as part of measures supported by the county agent’s staff. The 1.50 per hundred rate funds educational services and staff pay adjustments.

Macon County Budget Pitches 15 Cent Tax Hike

Macon County budget requests a 15 cent tax increase for schools but the board granted 10 cents, setting the county levy at 48 cents and projecting about 76 000 for 1996 57. Opening dates tentatively set August 28 for District 1 Franklin and surrounding areas and September 3 for District 2 Nant Highlands. Commissioner actions also include a 3 percent raise for county agricultural employees and approval of jail project bills.

Sweatman Dies At 81 In Morganton Area

Daniel Monroe Sweatman 81 longtime Forest Service worker and farmer died Thursday in Morganton hospital after illness of three weeks. He lived in Dills Creek Carnegocheaye area, native of Jackson County, born November 29 1875. He married Josie Johnson October 30 1899, who survives. Funeral Saturday at Carloogechaye Baptist Church with Rev Andrew Cloer officiating. Surviving: wife two sons Brodie Franklin Route 1 and Wiley Concrete Wash two daughters Fred Butterworth Mine Run Va and George E Anderson Route 1. brother Sam Route 3 sister Mrs John Hall Franklin. seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Hospital Wing Dedication Postponed at Angel Hospital

The dedication of the $280,000 Angel Hospital outpatient clinic wing is delayed due to construction delays. Medical director Dr N Angel says the event will likely be held in September.
