In a high turnout county election, George B. Patton won the judge of the Superior Court race in the seven county district by about 1300 votes, defeating Thad D. Bryson Jr. James Hank led a limited contest for another county seat, while Patton’s countywide victory echoed a broader Democratic performance with several incumbents unopposed. Shuford narrowly won the 12th Congressional District over four challengers, with Het Ollman a strong second in Waynesville, as Macon totals showed Shuford leading Rollman 1500 to 1470 and other candidates scoring smaller shares.

Brothers Arrested In Major Still Operation Probe
Federal agents raided the Coweta area over the weekend and uncovered a large illegal distilling operation. J Bell and R Bell, brothers, were arrested and posted bonds for appearance in W. 8 District Court in Bryson City. A warrant is held for Sam Cunningham. About 308 gallons of whiskey were seized along with a Mercury sedan and a Jeep truck. Leal Hastings was arrested with 15 gallons of liquor and scheduled for a hearing. The still was under a shed with water piped nearby. Vehicles impounded and moved to Asheville.

Music scholarship winner announced for Brevard College workshop

Tragic boating accident leaves two dead on Nantate Lake
Two teenagers from Burningtown survived as rescuers pulled Miss LeMae Fice, 16, of Oteen, and Maurice Sils, 36, a building contractor, from Nantate Lake after their boat capsized near Sem Passmore’s dock at 6 45 AM. Local rescue squads mobilized, bodies recovered at 11 15 for Rice and 3 10 for Elis, with 1300 spectators watching the search.

Edward Parmer 39, a Macon native and independent truck driver, died Monday night in a collision involving his tractor trailer that struck the rear of another loaded vehicle. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ames Parmer of Franklin Route. Funeral services were set for Thursday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Bryant Funeral Home handling arrangements.
