Mass trout fishing Draws Crowds at Cliffside Lake
Cliffside Lake on Highway 6 between Franklin and Highlands opened for trout fishing over the weekend of May 31 and June 1. Sixty four fishermen fished Saturday and 46 Sunday, landing 1085 fish totaling 188 pounds. Average catch was 10 fish per man, with 64% of the effort yielding no notably large trout. The event showcased strong stocking and protection by the U. S. Forest Service, N. State Fish and Game Commission, and the Bureau of Fisheries, largely from Walhalla hatchery. Dead fish on shore numbered ninety.

Marence Richards Rogers Ioda enlisted in the U S Navy on April 2 1941 and will take nine days leave with his parents after which he enters the Machine Mate s School at Naval Training Station Norfolk Virginia. Chief Rhinehardt notes monthly three day trips home beginning first Monday through Wednesday. Other recruits Grover Ray McCall and Morise Edition Gibson have been accepted for enlistment and will go to Norfolk for recruit training.
