Escapees Caught in Morganton After Road Gang Escape
Officers captured Milton Pate Austin and Jerry Looper, both awaiting terms at Macon Prison Camp for larceny, as they were spotted walking in Morganton downtown. The arrests counter the theory they stole a May 20 automobile from Macon Motor Company, later found abandoned in Georgia.

Band Future Dim as Director Is Dismissed
Franklin County Board of Education reports it is not practical to maintain the school band under current conditions. The band director, appointed in 1949 by Mr Beck, has been dismissed for a year while efforts to raise 3000 for school-owned instruments and proper practice quarters continue. The band, nearly erased by a fire, performed a spring concert using borrowed instruments and has yet to secure suitable rehearsal space at the new site.

A stormy June debut Tuesday hammered Macon County with heavy rain thunder and lightning. Nantahala Power and Light reported an outage affecting the entire system in the afternoon. Western Carolina Telephone crews worked through trouble as power and phone service were restored by evening. Rural farms fared better though transformers sustained damage and many telephones went out. WCTC crews continued mopping up as Assistant County Agent T H Fags noted no major agricultural damage.

Men Charged For Beating Vote Official
Two men Roger Holland 23 and Eugene Holland 28 were charged with assaulting a county election official at a Suffolk Township polling place before polls closed. The incident, described by officials, involved face injuries and knots on the head. witnesses included A. B. Potts precinct chairman and judges Crisp and Holland. Accident Injures Two Men In Electric Crane Incident
Franklin resident Charles Setser and Schneiss resident Howard Crankleton were injured Tuesday when a crane boom swung near high tension wires. Electricity arced from the lines to the boom, striking the two men as they unloaded steel beams. Both Macon men are recovering, per Associated Press reporting.
