Singers Hold Big Convention At Franklin
The Macon County Quarterly Singing Convention drew about 2,000 at the courthouse in Franklin. Classes from Macon, Haywood, Jackson and Swain counties performed in morning and afternoon sessions led by Jim M. Raby. The group adopted Revival Gem No 3 as the song book and planned the next fifth Sunday event for July in the courthouse with continued participation from Western North Carolina.

The Rural Letter Carriers Association of Western North Carolina met near Wayah Bald for a business meeting and picnic. Attendees included carriers and families from counties west of Buncombe. R. E. Gibson of Bryson City was elected president Smoky Mountains unit. Sam of Candler and Harold T. Sloan of Franklin were elected vice presidents. Mr. McDougald of Buncombe reelected secretary treasurer. After lunch many walked to Wayah Bald summit. Next meeting set for Memorial Day 1988.

Tom Bowie and Frank Grist, candidates for the United States Senate, spoke at the Macon county courthouse Monday night. Bowie urged tax revaluation and economy to fund state needs, criticized Cameron Morrison, and called for minimum prices for major farm products. Grist, also a Senate candidate, attacked Morrison, supported soldiers’ bonus and banking statutes, and spoke to a courthouse crowd after being introduced by J J Mann. Two other candidates exist on the ballot, K. Reynolds and Simmons, with limited campaign details available.

Franklin High School graduates fifty three at commencement
Twenty boys and thirty nine girls received diplomas as graduates at Franklin High School during the commencement exercises last Friday evening. The program was simple with no talent speakers. Prizes were awarded by W. K. Beichler of Asheville, state forester. Norman West won a statewide essay prize on the relation of fish and game, with Faion taking first prize and West sixth. Recipients included Lester Arnold, Howard Barnard, James Brabson, Earl Bryson, John Bulgin, Harry Cunningham, and many others.

Three large wild Canadian geese have taken up residence on Lake Emu near Franklin, wandering near Mrs. Will Sloan’s property by the Tennessee River. Local residents hope no one harms them, noting federal and state laws protect geese in summer.
