Seniors urged to serve region and state by college president

Western Carolina Teachers College president Paul A. Reid addressed Franklin High School’s 1950 graduates at the Maron Theatre urging three decades of seniors to dedicate their lives to useful service in North Carolina and the South. He called for embracing opportunity and building a strong region through human resources and civic responsibility.

Party Ballot Renominates 2 Commissioners in County

Democrats nominated 3 for sheriff, representative, and clerk of superior court, plus renomination of Roane and Edwards for county commissioners. In the four-way U.S. Senate race Thomas led with 1,697 votes. Bryson defeated Elmore for representative. McGee defeated Brookshire for clerk by 116. Roane and Edwards easily won renomination.

50 Years Ago This Week Franklin Local Notes

Fifty years ago this week a solar eclipse passed as observers in Franklin enjoyed clear skies. East Main Street buzzed with excitement over a runaway horse and damaged barn at Mr. Porter's. a wagon, buggy, and harvest stored goods were burned. Local high school held commencement with 25 graduates. Mims Crawford won the declamation medal, Edwina Dalrymple the best recitation, and Lois Ferguson the scholarship medal.

Hundreds Attend Program Honoring Dead Of 2 Wars

A large crowd gathered in Macon County to dedicate bronze plaques at the courthouse honoring 80 local war dead from World War I and II. The Memorial Day ceremony featured music, prayer, a poem, and a speaker, with flags and veterans groups present.

Franklin and Highlands see population shifts in 1950 census

Harry Sample of Asheville released preliminary 1950 census numbers for Franklin and Highlands townships. Franklin shows growth from 1964 to 1990 with a 58 percent rise since 1940, while Highlands declines from 549 to 814. Figures are unofficial. final totals will come from the census bureau. The Lions club reported on township recreation plans and farm dwelling counts, noting countywide farm totals rose to 2376 and dwellings to 5044.

VOTE CHANGES SCHOOL BOARD IN MACON COUNTY

In Macon County Democratic primary voters replaced three board of education members with T. Z. Love Sorrell and Charles W Nolanc e beating C Gordon Moore FA Edwards and J Brown Ing renomination. Incumbents renominated were Bob Sloan and Walter Gittin. Sorrell and Nolanc favored making the superintendent role full time.
