Paroled NC World War II hero Ernest Stamey to VA hospital

Associated Press dispatch from Raleigh reports Ernest B. Stamey 41 a Distinguished Service Cross recipient and fugitive paroled by Governor Hoey to enter a Virginia veterans hospital. Stamey was serving 25 to 30 years for the 1933 Macon County Dryman slaying. he had a prior murder conviction in 1916 and a wartime record of bravery. Parole, granted on petition and urged by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, covers hospitalization due to shell shock wounds and kidney trouble.

Garbage Truck Schedule Announced by Franklin Town Clerk

George Dean announces starting June 1 the garbage truck will run on a regular schedule. Businesses in the downtown area will be serviced before noon daily, with residential areas visited once weekly on specific afternoons and streets listed. Residents must place waste in metal cans with tight lids and cooperate with collections.

Lee Leach 66, longtime Franklin leader, dies at home

Andrew Lee Leach, 66, business and civic leader, died Sunday morning at his Franklin home after a long illness. Born in Swain County on June 12, 1872, he was the son of Frank and Susan Cunningham Leach and spent most of his life in Franklin.

Leach Family Patriarch Honored in Franklin County Obituary

The obituary notes the life of a married man to Miss Fanny Rogers of Cullowhee who died after active service in church business and civic life. A co owner in Leach Hardware, elder in the Presbyterian church, he previously worked for Coxe Hat in Bristol Tenn. Surviving are his widow and three children Helen Frank Hugh, plus brothers John of Andrews and others. Continued on Page Ten.

W M S District Meeting At Franklin Church Attended

The Waynesville District of the Woman's Missionary Societies of the Methodist church met at Franklin Methodist with about 200 members. Leaders from counties including Macon, Cherokee, Transylvania, Haywood, Jackson, Swain, Clay and Graham attended. reports highlighted progress and plans for the year. The Baby Derby honor roll and coupon drive were announced with prizes and deadlines, urging participation by Saturday.

A lively child lineup joins the Baby Derby field with entrants from Franklin and Highlands. Three year old Kil and companions, including Charlotte Bloxham and Raymond Cleaveland, showcase blue or brown eyes, blonde or auburn hair, and weights ranging from 18 to 33 pounds. Special prizes of 10 and 5 dollars spark weekly shows as Joe Parker Rhinehart and Hannah Gillespie also feature on the honor roll.
