Vance Mauney a former professional ball player and Larth Cunningham of Reidsville, both Macon county natives, spent holidays with the Cunningham parents in Totla. Mauney, who played in the South Atlantic League and later with Detroit New Haven and New York, now manages the boxing department at the American Tobacco company.
The Macon county National Reemployment Service office has registered 1941 persons since opening on August 3. Of these, 58 are women. During the period of registration 410 placements have been made, with about 200 more expected soon.
The Macon County Singing Convention will meet Sunday December 31 at 10 o clock for an all day meeting at the courthouse. James M Raby chairman requests soloists quartets and classes to be present from adjoining counties and from South Carolina and Georgia.
Franklin Webster school principal Frank Rhinehart, 37, recounted a brutal 36 hour ordeal after two men abducted him near Sylva Friday night. He said he was driven through Dillsboro and Mountain City, repeatedly threatened, had his hands and feet tied, and was left beside a train before being dropped off near Peck Hotel and later treated at Sylva Community Hospital. The Christmas pageant The Wondrous Gift directed by Mrs Eugene R Eller was shown at the First Baptist Church Monday night to a large audience. Cast included Shep herd Alex Moore J H Cave lock Bill Cunningham J B Pen degrass Ralph Welch Henry Wilkie EB De Hart Dan Wilkie inn keeper IEE Sypher Rabbi Womack Mary Helen Shepheard Joseph Fred Childers and fourteen B Y P A girls as angels. Junior choir directed by Mrs Gilbert sang four prelude songs.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon for J W Porter 63 a longtime Andrews resident and mercantile worker. He died Tuesday night at his home. The Andrews Methodist church where he was a steward conducted the rites with ministers from nearby towns assisting. He leaves two children two brothers three sisters and a step mother among other relatives. Porter was born in Franklin and resided in Andrews for nearly 40 years active in town government and school affairs.
The state banking department reports that this year closed banks have paid 2 040 284 to depositors and 544 861 to preferred claimants.
About 12,000 pounds of government salt pork will be distributed to needy residents. A central distribution center is set up behind a local store in the old Farmers Federation building with Miss Charlotte Gonley in charge. Store hours are Thursday Friday Saturday and Monday for residents of Lumon Springs Oak Ridge Watauga Holly Springs Mash Burn Branch Clark's Chapel Patton Olive Hill and Totla, who must obtain an order from the Red Cross or Relief Committee before presentation to the store-room keeper.
Reported birth on a Saturday of an heir to the Japanese throne completing a sequence of four daughters born to Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nakago. The nation had prayed for a prince, making the fifth child a male heir.
The annual Red Cross Roll Call in Macon County aims to raise 300 memberships with $167 collected so far. Highlands township led by Prof C F Summer reports 47 members enrolled, while many names are listed as contributors and solicitors urged to finish the drive.
Hand injured Kay Swafford the young son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Swafford near the Setser residence suffered the loss of three fingers and a thumb on his left hand Saturday morning when a dynamite cap he was playing with exploded. Mrs. Swafford found the cap in the basement and, unaware of its danger, gave it to him. He was taken to Angel Brothers hospital and is reported to be doing nicely.
The Democratic majority on the Ways and Means Committee approves a $2 per gallon spirits tax. They oppose sharing whisky tax revenues with states and push a doubled tariff on imported whiskies. Trade and exporting nations are pressured in the bargain.
Christmas buying ran heavy in Franklin with plentiful stock yet tight supply in shops. A fatal shooting on Walnut Creek near Randolph Keener’s home left Fred Sitwinter dead after a confrontation with Billy Pickens. Inquest found Sitwinter died from a 232 caliber bullet to the heart. Pickens claimed self defense after being attacked with a knife. A church watch night service closes the year in Franklin.
Handel's Messiah presented Sunday night at First Methodist drew a packed house. McDowell Music Club from Franklin formed the chorus, with Porter directing and organ duties. Local soloists and instrumentalists participated, including Edwin Alba Peek, Betty Miss, Rosalind Bulin, Velma Peck, and George Carpenter Jr, while William Bressler from Oakland played the violin. The Joy to the World chorus was also performed.
The $100,000 CCC educational program approved by the president expands in 1466 forest work camps. Vocational subjects will be taught along with forestry and agriculture to help young workers adapt to a new era, with Interior War Labor and Agriculture departments collaborating to implement the system under War Department direction.
