Official Washington fears a genuine boom may lift commodity prices and living costs after recent recovery. Government and business may coordinate to curb speculation and price rises, while wage demands and longer hours could amplify inflation. Continued on Page Five.
Lawrence Shepherd, 14, died after a truck ran over him on highway No. 286 near Lost Bridge. He was crushed beneath a load of stone and died about five minutes after the accident. He left a widow and five children. He worked for Lambert Brothers stone contractors supplying crushed stone for highway No. 286 surfacing.

Three Franklin Boy Scouts were promoted to Eagle Scout at a district court of honor held Monday in the Franklin Presbyterian church. Harry Higgins, William Bryant, and Bert Hall received their Eagle badges. others earned Tenderfoot to Merit badges. The event, presided by Dr. W. E. Furr, highlighted the troop’s strong reputation in the Smoky Mountains district and Daniel Boone council.

About 350 to 400 Macon County children are expected at a Christmas tree party at 2 pm at the courthouse under Macon County Post No. 1 of the American Legion. Organizers reported a cash balance of 21 and plan fund-raising by a public committee. G A Jones chairs the Legion committee, Boise Hall is post commander, and Dr T J O'Neil spoke at the meeting alongside GA Jones and other officers. Franklin boy scouts will help Santa distribute presents to underprivileged children, with each member urged to sponsor four attendees and provide transport.
Franklin prepares for a three day Christmas break with offices and courts closed until Monday. Forest Service offices close at 1 pm today, post office operates limited hours and returns Monday. Drug stores stay open except for two hours mid day. banks and The Franklin Press also close for the holiday.
