George N. Peck retires as farm administrator to head a new division targeting foreign markets for farm commodities. The division seeks foreign exchange agreements and partnerships to trade domestic goods for imported goods.
The civil works administration plans to employ 17 724 unemployed white collar workers. In Waynesville James Sheffield 50 was convicted of the August 8 murder of James Miller 1 and faces electrocution. Four other men go on trial for the murder of Thomas Price. New York millionaire shot on a riding trail of a large estate. Cash payments of 115 022 38 under the agricultural adjustment act sent to farmers for acreage reductions. The federal emergency relief administration buys 12 000 000 dozens of eggs to aid the unemployed. LEAS LOSE COURT FIGHT North Carolina to serve terms for wrecking the Central Bank. They appealed to the U S Supreme Court. $4 000 000 for park road first advance on 16 000 000 project connecting Shenandoah and Great Smoky national parks.
Albert Ramsey, who underwent an operation for appendicitis at Angel Brothers Hospital last Friday morning, was reported today to be greatly improved. Initial days of the week showed extremely critical condition and despair over his life, but he gained strength and Thursday was said to be on the road to recovery. Mrs Eaton Passes in Miami at 95. S. E. Eaton’s mother, Mrs. Eaton, died in Miami on Wednesday December 6 in her 95th year, leaving six sons and daughters. Mrs Eaton, noted for charm and cheerful disposition, had stayed in Franklin with her daughter Miss Eaton and was a frequent summer visitor at her son’s home in Franklin. Birth of a daughter reported Friday December 8 at Totla home of Mr. and Mrs. Glen DeHart.
Telegram from the North Pole dated December 14 1993 requests the press to announce Santa Claus will be in Franklin Saturday December 16 at Sanders Store as Santa holds court all day. He will display sample toys and invite county children to share Christmas wishes before returning to his North Pole workshop.
Atlanta reports Georgia Highway Commission approved paving the Georgia link of the Tri State highway nine miles from the state line to Walhalla. The project costs about 84000 with half funded by Georgia and half by the U S Forestry Service. Completion is expected to boost Highlands summer tourism by improving access for visitors from South Carolina and Georgia.
Twenty one men started work Monday on an auditorium at Highlands School under the CWA program. Architect H I Gaines of Asheville drafts plans for a 46 by 79 foot hall expected to seat about 900. CWA funds amount to roughly 5800 with lumber from the U S Forestry Service and proceeds from last summer's schoolhouse pictures, plus land from the Barak Wright lot west of the school. Completion hoped by March 1. Principal A F Summer says the building will host moving pictures, school programs, public meetings and other group events.
Officials of the newly organized Macon County union of the American Federation of Labor expect an enrollment of 500 members. The group organized at Odd Fellows hall on Friday night December 1 with 31 members. Officers elected include Jack Stribling president Gordon Moore vice president George McGee financial secretary John W Edwards secretary George Stallscup guide and guardian Harry Higgins treasurer Gene Jacobs Thomas Johnson and Joe Setzer trustees W B Plemmons of Asheville spoke as VP of the North Carolina federation of labor noting 832 new locals have been organized since July 16.
The Rev H J Granger of Canton will conduct the evening prayer service and preach at St Agnes Episcopal Church at 730 PM Sunday night There will be no morning service but the Sunday school will be held at the usual hour 10 AM
A box supper will be held at the Cowee school house Friday at 7:30 pm to benefit the Cowee basketball team. Music by a string band. Public invites especially members of the Civilian Conservation camps to attend. REPEAL REMOVES TAX BURDEN Tax revenues on legalized liquor drop the nation’s $3.5 million special tax burden. Estimated benefits to North Carolinians total $3,364,967.
John W. Edwards, manager of the Franklin office of the national reemployment service, returned from Asheville with news that white collar men and women would get a chance to work under the C. W. A. program. Washington reports 423 people in North Carolina will be employed. Census workers will be recruited from qualified unemployed registering immediately. Five census projects include business census and real property inventory. Field work starts soon and should finish by mid February.
Mrs. Oda Kelly Greenwood, longtime Franklin resident, is hospitalized in Greenville South Carolina with a crushed knee a broken leg and severe head lacerations after being struck by an automobile last week while crossing a street.
Plans are completed for a Franklin Community Christmas tree event for children to be held at the courthouse on Saturday evening December 23. A Friday Methodist church meeting will fill stockings with fruits and candies contributed by each church.
Rev Norvin C Duncan, who had been convalescing at home, has recovered enough to return to St Peter's hospital in Charlotte for further treatment. Rector Mr Dianean of St Agnes Episcopal church in Franklin was taken to Charlotte last Friday and stood the trip well with encouraging reports on his condition.
F Sloan county farm demonstration agent submitted his annual report showing total farm sales and purchases through him at 5949 dollars, with actual earnings of 1645 dollars for farmers in the past year. He foresees greater demand for county agents in 1934, notes strong livestock placement, and cites case histories including Henderson of Gneiss earning 971.72 dollars and Mrs Holt of Highlands netting 373.35 from cabbage and other examples, highlighting that proper management and balanced farming can yield profits above production costs.
Zickwraf Warren Lumber reports construction of a mill will proceed despite I C C approval of railway abandonment. Bakareh says not discouraged, predicts line will gain business once the plant opens, with capacity up to 25,000 board feet daily. Officials pledge a spur to the mill, linking to the Franklin Mineral area.
The Interstate Commerce Commission permits the Tallulah Falls Railway to abandon its 17 mile line from Cornelia to Franklin with approval for JP Gray, the receiver, to cease operations. The order allows continuation if the line remains self supporting, with formal notice issued and a 30 day effective date. Judge Underwood may review before final action, while officials report traffic gains and hope for continued service.
Mrs Maggie Butt, 77, mother of Mrs N C Duncan of Franklin, died Tuesday at her home in Winterville after a lengthy illness. Funeral at St John’s Church in Winterville on Thursday. Survived by H Butt of Asheville W H Butt of Cuba Mrs N C Duncan of Franklin Vida Butt of Asheville and six grandchildren. She taught in public and mission schools across the state.
A district meeting of managers, staff, and committeemen of the National Reemployment Service of Western North Carolina was held in the courthouse in Asheville Wednesday at 8 o'clock. Those attending from Avery county were Miss Mildred Moral, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Edwards, W. G. Stewart, and Rufus Snyder.
Deputy Charie Jones special deputy sheriff raided a Walnut Creek still, capturing a 20 gallon boiler. His tenant house and barn burned to ground, hay and feed destroyed, with bloodhounds tracking scent to suggest incendiary fire but no culprit yet. Witness Mel Fouston aided in raid. another man fled. Over-subscribed treasury note issue noted.
