Topton Man Given 12-18 Month Term For Manslaughter
Ralph Hardin of Topton was found guilty of manslaughter by a Macon County jury at Devi er court. He was sentenced by Judge Dan Ke Moore to 12 to 18 months. Barbara Brown has been appointed assistant home demonstration agent for Macon County, reporting January 1. She replaces Ann Ray Murray who resigned last August. Brown is a University of Georgia home economics graduate who taught fourth grade in Dillard, California, and is the daughter of C. B. Brown of Dillard. She will work with Mrs. Florence S. Sherrill on 4 H club work, with extension workers appointed by the state and county boards.

Franklin Board Reaches Secret Ballot Name Change Verdict
The Franklin board of aldermen, debating the former Old Georgia Road name since last August, voted 4 to 2 by secret ballot Monday night to keep or change the street name. The result, announced in a written ballot, left unknown how individuals voted. The street now runs from U S Highway 23 at John B. Ray’s residence north to West Main Street, with markers blank until decision. Delegations protested the change and urged retaining Old Georgia Road. The markers will be labeled Maple Street and installed soon. The board also approved purchasing a motor grader for street work, and discussed water supply, noting a surplus of 1,500,000 gallons last month. seven additional water meters were ordered to ensure meter coverage for all users. Rule Out New Franklin High
It has been decided it would prove too expensive to remodel the present high school building at Franklin into a gymnasium auditorium. County Supt. Guy L. Houk told the county board of education Monday that the State Board of Education approved the county's self building program. The plan retains the old building as a high school with repairs and builds a new gymnasium structure. Final action depends on bond attorney issues, with recommendations for consolidating schools and new facilities across several areas.
