Roll Call Ends With Large Macon County Turnout
The 1939 Roll Call in Macon County reports 325 memberships received already with more expected countywide, the strongest turnout since 1923. Highlands added 19 memberships bringing their total to 84, and Burrell Motor Company led enrollments at 100 percent of staff. Mrs. George W. Mallonee, 53, died at her Harrison Avenue home Thursday morning after months with a heart ailment and complications. A graduate nurse from New London Conn, she married George Mallonee on January 29, 1913. Surviving: her father A. D. Perkins and sister Mrs. George Carosa of New London. A box supper will be held at the Watauga school house on Saturday night December 10 at 7 30. Proceeds will fund a piano for the Watauga Baptist church. Music and entertainment will be provided and the public is invited to attend and help make the event a success.

New County Officers Take Oath After Election
County officials elected on November 8 were sworn in and began their terms Monday. New faces include Lester L. Arnold and Frank J. Murray, while others were reelected. Sheriff A B Slagle and coroner C M Moore joined the list, with George B. Patton set to be sworn in in January. Attorney General Harry McMullen ruled that sheriffs and coroners sworn Monday serve four years under the constitutional amendment.

Work Begun On School Bus Stations
Construction has started on 12 bus shelters for children awaiting school transport. The log structures will have hand-hewn shingle roofs, with timber from the forest service. Labor is provided by the National Youth Administration under Macon county supervisor Mrs J A Ordway and E S Hunnicutt. County commissioners will supply nails and fuel for an NYA truck. this is the county’s only expense. If successful, the plan aims to extend to 40 stations.

Noah Jasper Corbin aged 85 dies at his home in Watauga Tuesday morning after a 10 day illness from flu and pneumonia. He was a farmer, longtime Democrat, born on Rabbit Creek headwaters, member of Watauga Baptist Church. Funeral held at Watauga Baptist Church with Rev George A Cloer. burial in church cemetery. Survived by three daughters, two sons, 21 grandchildren and three great grandchildren, plus a half sister and half brother.

Macon Court Meets Monday in December Term
The December term of Macon county superior court opened Monday with Judge Felix E. Alley presiding. A grand jury was sworn and a number of misdemeanor cases, mainly liquor and traffic violations, were entered with pleas of guilty and no jury trials. The murder case of Mrs. Lawrence Mason appeared Wednesday requiring juror selection from 100 veniremen, with evidence starting Thursday and the trial anticipated to occupy the rest of the week. The American Legion Auxiliary and Clyde Gailey sponsor Monday matinee shows for children at the Macon Theatre. Each child brings two discarded toys to donate, which are collected and then restored by Mrs Eloise G Franks welfare superintendent before being given to the American Legion for their Christmas tree program.
