Senator Robert Reynolds takes seat in North Carolina Senate as discussion of repeal intensifies. House votes fall short of the required two thirds for repeal, while Governor Ehringhaus remains central to state leadership in Raleigh.
Logan A Allen died at age 72 after a heart attack. Funeral services were held at First Baptist church with Rev. Eugene R Ever and Rev. C P Ader officiating. He was a longtime Baptist church member, a major Macon County property owner, survived by widow Fannie Shepherd later, an adopted son Logan Jr, and three sisters in Tennessee, Washington, and North Carolina. Prof J W G Reed of Sylva elected chairman with A M Adams Cherokee vice chairman. The district joins the Daniel Boone Council with Asheville as center and plans monthly committee meetings a Court of Honor training and camping programs. Several troops will form in 60 days and a Scoutmaster training course is set for January.
The W. M. Ritter Lumber Company will resume operations at its Rainbow Springs band mill early next month after a shutdown last July that left many workers unemployed. About twenty to thirty woodsmen were recalled to cut logs so the mill can start up again by January 1, with former employees to be rehired in the mill and yard. Officials cite an improved lumber market and aim for eight hours daily, six days a week.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Salem Methodist Church for E G Watkins 63 who died at his sister’s home in Franklin North Carolina. He had lived with his sister for seven years and previously owned three ranches in Arizona. He is survived by daughter Ruth Dalley and son Ralph Watkins of Los Angeles California. Santa Claus plans another pre Christmas visit to Franklin, arriving December 17 and staying through Monday at Sanders Store. The report notes a national river and harbor funding request totaling 99 million dollars with 24 million for maintenance and 14.9 million for improvements.
