Over the Top for Macon County Post in Drive
The Macon county post of the American Legion earned a service certificate for surpassing its October 1 membership drive goal. Adjutant A. R. Higdon announced the honor, with Commander G. A. Jones noted. J. M Caldwell sent the citation from the state. The post exceeded its 32 membership target by signing 33, and Boise Hall earned a fountain pen by joining as a member. Red Cross reaches armistice roll call goal in Macon County

Ashe Named Town Fire Chief Succeeding Cunningham
Derald Ashe was elected chief of Franklin's volunteer fire department by the town council Tuesday night following the resignation of John L. Cunningham who had held the post since June 1. The job carries a salary of 10 dollars a month plus firemen's insurance benefits and town payment of telephone rental. Ashe had served as fire chief for four years prior to this appointment.

Two Convicts Escape From State Camp
Two inmates Dorus Sisk age 25 of Cherryville and Olin Ferguson age 31 of Rocky Mount Virginia escaped from a state convict camp near here Sunday and were at large. Both held Grade B rank and are believed to have obtained Grade A non striped uniforms and walked off. They were sighted near Cartoogechaye area and tracked toward the Skeenah area possibly heading to Georgia.

WPA Workers Have Pay Day In Macon County
Payroll for 135 laborers and four foremen on Works Progress Administration projects in Macon County totaled 2757 dollars, the first WPA payroll here since mid October. 883 workers on 19 projects now employed. full monthly payroll estimated over 17000 dollars. Wage rates range from 19 dollars for laborers to 48 dollars for foremen. 130 hour monthly requirement.

Dorothy Blumenthal fourteen daughter of Mr and Mrs Moses Blumenthal was struck by a car on her way to school at Porter and Palmer streets. She suffered a forehead cut treated at the hospital and returned to school. Mrs F M Tessier was reported to have been driving the car.

Ledford Furniture Company moved its store Wednesday from the Franks building on East Main Street to the Cunningham building on the public square. The former Ledford site has been leased by Farmers Federation Inc which plans to open a store and warehouse there on Saturday December 14.
