Macon County Memorial Association asks the public to check and correct a list of 74 county men who died in World War II. Chairman Gilmer A Jones urges letters with full names and middle initials to ensure the plaques, to be placed at the courthouse entrance, are complete and correct before orders are placed.
Franklin High school Panthers opened with an early lead in the Smoky Mountain Bowl but fell 19 to 13 to Sevierville High. Sevierville scored on an end run from the 20 yard line and added a second on a pass. Huggins led Franklin, with Thomas and Leach key at guard and tackle. Sevierville captain received the bowl trophy, and Franklin players were honored at a Lions Club dinner after the game.
The Franklin school band fund drive rough Monday totaled 1049 dollars, as reported by Lion club president Frank B. Duncan. He noted the sum comes from many small donations, including several from people who own summer homes but live out of state, with funds used for welfare work in Macon County. The drive will operate on Main Street each Saturday between now and Christmas.
Charles Leake state game protector for Standing Indian wildlife management area is recovering from a self inflicted gunshot wound. He was shot below the right hip when his .45 discharged as he fell about two miles from his White Oak Bottoms home. Unable to summon help he used a belt as a tourniquet and limped home on crutches for treatment.

Reports from the Nantahala National Forest detail a second of three hunts on the Landing Indian wildlife management area with nine deer killed last week. Additional hunts for deer hogs raccoons and opossums are planned across Santeetlab Fires Creek and Standing Indian areas with permits costing $1 and a daily bag limit of one raccoon per hunter.
Miss Gretchen Johnson, missionary worker for the County Baptist association, tendered her resignation effective immediately. The Rev Paul C. Nix said Johnson is to marry Rev John C. Corbitt of Anna, Texas, who serves at La Ella Baptist Church in She-man and is studying at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. They plan to marry soon and then resume studies together to become missionaries. Johnson has worked with 41 Baptist churches in the county since last May.
A meeting to organize a wildlife club in Maceo County has been set for Monday at 9 am in the Agricultural Building. Ross Stevens of the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and G. A. Sones Jr of the Wildlife Resources Commission will attend, with county sportsmen and others invited to attend.
Scores two score of more young men and women of this county who se away at school spent the Thanksgiving holidays at home with their families. The largest group was seven from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Names include Miss Anes Pure EW Angel, Robert Bob Myers, Hall Calahan, Fred West, Dean Henson, James Pu Home, Kenneth Welen, Lewis Penang, James Patterson, Hayes Gresley, Tom Seser, Bob Tippett. Others from Mars Hill, Wake Forest, Carson-Newman, Meredith, Brevard, Western Carolina, Peace College, and the University of Georgia are listed among those spending the holidays at home. John Wasik announced plans to install shortwave radios at Cowee Pinnacle and Yellow Mountain fire towers in Nantahala and Jackson counties. The system will link towers and ranger headquarters, cutting message time from ten to two minutes, aiding fire control and safety. The ranger truck will also carry radio for rapid reports from any forest area. Wasik urged caution with fire in dry litter and cited a hunter fire that damaged four acres of habitat and watershed.
Four men were nominated to elect three Soil Conservation District supervisors in Maron County. Voters may cast ballots Monday through Saturday at Downs Feed, Franklin. Farmers Federation, Franklin. Mrs. Bessie Brown’s store, Sealy. and Weaver Cochran’s store, Flats. Winners serve three, two, and one year terms starting January 1 1950, with duties to guide soil conservation work and coordinate with the state on funding and farming surveys.
The Archaeological Society of North Carolina will hold its fall session near Cherokee with two Saturday sessions and a Sunday meeting timed with the Cherokee Tydian Feast. The 125 member group, led by H. M. Doerschuk of Bladen County, seeks to excavate Indian mounds in the region and invites members to attend as guests.
A local cinema postpones the film program due to unspecified reasons. The schedule change affects the opera themed showing originally planned for today and tomorrow with no new date announced.
The Macon County superior court term opens Monday with 80 cases listed. Twenty two new cases join the grand jury, and 38 from prior terms are carried over.
