Enrollment Growth at Local Nursery School Opens Doors
The nursery school in the agricultural building opened November 14 under Dr T J O Neil Recreatory director and now averages one new pupil daily with 33 children ages 3 to 5. Mrs Allie E Wood heads the staff with assistants Verlon Stockton and Marie Rogers as activities include singing, story time, clay painting and block building. Lunch follows with fruit or tomato juice and many provide their own cups. New teachers will double enrollment, while volunteers are invited to donate needed equipment and supplies for this community venture.

Banquet to Honor UNC Coach Wolf in Franklin High Event
UNC head coach Ray B. Wolf is slated to speak at a Franklin high school football banquet on Friday December 9. Public Urged To Buy Seals In Tuberculosis Drive
Josephine Dixon, R N, Macon County Health Department, urges Macon county residents to buy Christmas seals as part of a nationwide TB education drive now in its 32nd year with 75 percent of proceeds returning to the county. Man in Horse Cove Ends Life With Shotgun
Carter McDowell, 35, of Horse Cove, died Thursday morning from a self inflicted shotgun wound. Found near Horse Cove road about four miles southeast of Highlands by two residents en route to a sawmill job. Coroner and jury ruled the death a suicide. Funeral and interment held Friday at Betty's Creek.

Ted Gillespie of Franklin and Grace Fleming operating a Georgia road filling station were sentenced in U S court at Bryson City on liquor charges. Gillespie got 18 months, Fleming 10 months. Gillespie to a government prison in Pennsylvania, Fleming to Petersburg Virginia for pellagra treatment in a government hospital.

WPA Lays Off 871 Men in Macon County Work
WPA laid off about 871 workers from Macon County projects last Friday with Franklin area offices uncertain when work will resume. Shortages of materials halted market road projects and a forest service WPA fund project was discontinued with no reason given. Sewing rooms lunch rooms and other women’s projects continue. NYA and recreational work remain funded separately. Officials hope layoffs are temporary pending orders from state and federal headquarters.

Street Holiday Decorations Planned by Franklin Chamber
The Franklin Chamber of Commerce funds street decorations on Main Street for the holiday season. Nantahala Power and Light company will assemble install and light the display.
