The Lincoln-Way Community High School Board split 4-3 to end a ban on early graduates in formal commencement. Opponents cited discrimination as parents pressed for juniors finishing 17 credits by year’s end to join this year’s seniors in ceremonies.
A special board meeting discussed how seventh semester graduates face additional requirements beyond the standard credits. The plan includes parent student consent to participate in commencement, a cash cap gown deposit, and counseling guidance. Superintendent Joe Kruzich criticized the policy as discriminatory toward juniors, fearing legal challenges if juniors skip events.
Summit Hill district 161 accepts deed to 12 acre Mainstreet Frankfort Square parcel donated by Hoffman Rosner for a 500 student K-5 open space building. Planning with architect Scheidemantle set for January. funding via CAPS grant potential up to 70 percent of a $2.5 million project, with bond options debated for 1977 referendum. Other actions include resignations and new hires at Frankfort Square Summit Hill and Arbury Hills schools.
Nominating petitions for April park district elections in Frankfort Mokena New Lenox and Frankfort Square were filed by two candidates Alain Murry and Richard Brandline both of New Lenox seeking six year terms. Several communities report more petitions out with filing expected by April 19 and candidates must be 18 and resident voters.
Citizens Utility asks the Illinois Commerce Commission for a rehearing arguing mathematical errors in the December ruling that allowed a 21 percent water and sewer increase. The company contends a $260,000 discrepancy could justify a 26 to 27 percent rise, cites depreciation and tax issues, and notes potential further actions if denied.
