Two rivalries headline a full weekend schedule with Sandburg facing Shepard and Tinley Park taking on Oak Forest. The games anchor a regional basketball spread across sports pages 29 through 34.
Frankfort area volunteer firefighters convened to organize a district wide protest following the trustees removal of Don Lorenz as chief candidate in favor of Bruce Wells. President Dale Christian said moral action may push district officials to reconsider the appointment.
A group of firefighters at a Monday meeting threatened protests including pamphlets and contacting Senator-elect George Langmeister and county board members to pressure trustees. Some consider boycotting the December 18 Frankfort blood drive to ensure emergency blood supplies for about 20 000 people while others urge proceeding with the program. Resignations by Christain and Lorenz fuel tension as they claim politics intruded into department leadership.
Frankfort Square park officials warn residents not to ice skate on the pond at Frankfort and St. Francis roads. Park director Bob Denton cites ordinance one and fines from twenty five to two hundred dollars for violators.
The Tinley Park STAR-HERALD received an honorable mention in the 1976 National Better Newspaper contest for spot news coverage of the December 1975 Shine family fire that killed six children and their mother, the village’s worst blaze. The Harvey Star-Tribune also won an award, with a third place in best feature story.

Will County board re-elected Ted Grabavoy as chairman in a 22-5 tally with four Republicans voting for him on the final ballot. Democrat William Starner won the post of vice chairman as the board formed its new leadership after a caucus and oath ceremony.
Lincoln-Way high school music department presents annual Christmas Vespers with the a cappella choir concert chorale and wind ensemble in the auditorium. About 200 students perform the hallelujah chorus from Messiah. tickets are required, complimentary tickets from participating students, golden passes admitted, no admission charge.
