Area thrift shops run by volunteers offer donated clothing, household items and toys to support worthy causes. Ethel Real, 82, is one of the oldest volunteers at the Family Service and Mental Health center in Steger as a feature on page 8.
Frankfort Square Park district outlines fall recreation offerings with programs for children teens and adults. Registration runs tomorrow and Tuesday at Frankfort Square Elementary School 7 to 9 p m and must be completed by August 31. Programs include baton tumbling soccer and holiday arts and crafts with various age groups and fees.
Area districts including Frankfort New Lenox Mokena and Summit Hill begin Tuesday August 30 with short sessions lasting about an hour. Frankfort District 1570 has a half day for Hickory Creek Chelsea and Frankfort Junior High. High schools begin August 30 with freshmen at Lincoln Way east 8 15 am and central campus 8 30 am. All District 210 and high school grades return Wednesday and Thursday with fees for books lab and PE uniforms noted. Parents urged not to bring students first week to avoid bus confusions.
The Lincoln Way school board approved a balanced 5.571 million budget for 1977-78 with education fund allocations of 3.95 million and operations 513 thousand. The board set September 27 for dedication of the new east campus and a back to school night there, with a similar program on September 28 at the central campus. The meeting also covered the cafeteria finance report and accepted the resignation of custodian Melvin Johnson.
Star Publications announces a new Lincoln Way area newspaper The Frankfort Mokena Star starting September 11. It will replace the Star Herald to focus on Frankfort Mokena and nearby communities in north central Will County with local news and features.
The Frankfort Mokena Star hosts 10 a.m. publicity clinics at Kellys Wagon Wheel in Frankfort and Cusimano s in Mokena to show local groups how news fits the paper. Attendees receive a publicity manual and can call 312 349 7464 for reservations.
Betty Renkor reports that Title IX reshapes U.S. schools by ending single sex classes and activities. As districts move toward full compliance by 1978, Consolidated High School District 230 shows progress with coed physical education scheduling and elective options like softball tennis badminton volleyball archery and gymnastics.
The Cook County grand jury indicted 19 year old Donald J. Villa on seven counts for the July 12 shooting of Tinley Park Patrolman Louis Jogmen. The charges include one count of attempted murder two counts of armed robbery and four counts of aggravated battery arising from the Brementowne 7 11 store holdup and related events. Det. Tom Hayes testified before the jury which deliberated briefly. Villa remains in fair condition at Oak Forest Hospital undergoing rehabilitation.
