Mokena School District 159 faces a 714000 shortfall as expenditures of 1950765 outpace 1311248 in revenue. The deficit grows from 467000 this year, with planned cuts and staffing changes likely to trim costs before a public hearing on April 28.
UMTA approves 21 480 900 million to buy 35 Highliner double deck electric commuter cars for Illinois Central Gulf and Rock Island lines. Five Will County park districts Frankfort Mokena New Lenox Frankfort Square and Manhattan agreed to coordinate a summer recreational program for the Lincoln Way area. The committee approved Sandra Mills a Frankfort resident and junior at Illinois to supervise activities.
A proposed regional summer program for handicapped children advances with park officials planning arts and crafts and playground activities. MISS MILLS will coordinate supervision with a tentative meeting set in two weeks. Registration will run with regular park district activities in June. Lincoln Way area officials report 52 potential participants and 13 favorable survey responses, backing the effort despite a state aid cut. New Illinois law allows a 20 cent per $1,000 local tax without referendum to fund such programs, though taxpayers may challenge it.
Frankfort Mokena and New Lenox police acquire a four foot recording machine to log all radio and phone traffic at the New Lenox communications center. The device backs the written log, records time stamps, and may be admissible in court. Sponsorship by the Mokena Lions Club cut the price from 4000 to 2309 dollars.
