Initiative's next step faces Illinois Supreme Court ruling
The initiative to let voters draft and pass laws in Illinois was struck down by Circuit Judge George Higgins as unconstitutional. He ruled it would create an extra legislative branch bypassing the current structure. Coalition spokesmen say an appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court was filed Tuesday.

Rate hike hearing set for Prestwick Utilities August 3
The Illinois Commerce Commission will resume the Prestwick Utilities rate hearing August 3 at 1030 am with possible continuation August 4. A June delay followed a commission member resignation. cross examination and rebuttal are expected. If approved, water rates could rise up to 42 percent and sewer rates up to 2 percent with bills increasing significantly under a quarterly system. Local associations oppose the hike, sharing legal fees with attorney John Rogers.
