Mokena library seeks funds to bolster book collection
The Mokena library district requests 5000 from federal revenue sharing to improve holdings. Elaine Redemer says the current 16500 volume collection falls short of state guidelines urging 33764 books for a district of 5,000 to 10,000. A finance committee public hearing and a June 28 board meeting will decide on the grant.

Prestwick Utilities ICC rate hike hearing postponed
The Illinois Commerce Commission postponed Prestwick Utilities rate hike hearings to allow a newly appointed commissioner time to prepare an audit and become familiar with the case. A new date is expected late this week, with delays likely into July or August. The hearing concerns proposed water and sewer rate increases for Frankfort Square and Prestwick, potentially raising water 40 percent and sewer 52 percent for many residents, though minimum bills would rise less. Homeowner associations oppose the hikes, aided by attorney John Rogers, citing long-running efforts to block such increases dating back to 1970s disputes.

Power outages blamed on lightning in suburban Illinois
Utility suspects lightning caused Tuesday outages affecting most of Mokena and Frankfort Square and parts of Frankfort. Commonwealth Edison district superintendent Robert Barnes said loss on three feeder lines may stem from a bolt at the Route 45 substation in Frankfort. Most of Mokena was without power from 8:45 to 11:15 a.m. Frankfort Square also suffered an outage while some Frankfort areas remained powered. A Route 45 and Colorado Avenue stoplight was out in the morning. the Frankfort sewage plant ran on generators from about 11 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. Don Stephen, Frankfort public works superintendent, said the plant operated on emergency power. Barnes noted Edison’s priority was restoring service and then investigating the cause.
