District keeps academic grouping in Mokena schools
District 159 will continue ability based grouping this year with added focus on boosting self esteem and expectations for low and low-average students. Willowcrest-Mokena principal Dale Fausch told the board that while high groups show strong growth, low groups risk stagnation and low self concept without adjustments. He stressed that grouping generally yields good results and will not be phased out, noting first through fifth graders have shown favorable scores and 25 first graders will enter accelerated math this fall. The board also approved a $2,359 change order for six piers at Willowcrest to match the school’s exterior theme and set student transportation fees at $8 per month for 1983-84.
