56 Cub Scouts Enroll In Learn To Swim Program

Fifty six Mokena Cub Scouts joined a Red Cross learn to swim program taught by Mrs. George H. Bills in a private pool donated by Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kuchenbecker Sunny Acres. The course ran 9 to noon with beginner and advanced classes and produced numerous passing cards and advanced certificates.

Hornet Battle Over Water Hole Averted In City Work

Vic Eisenbradt a Frankfort utility worker opened and reset a hydrant and narrowly avoided a hornet attack. A hornet darted toward him as water gushed from the line leaving his cheek sore for hours. The tale frames Old West battles for a water source with a local twist.

Mokena Adopts System to Number Homes for Mail Delivery

The Mokena village board approved a home numbering plan to support doorstep mail delivery. Mulford Engineering will re number homes and businesses using Chicago street numbers, with Sept 1 completion and no street name changes.

Frankfort Homecoming Underway With Bands and Parades

Frankfort hosts its annual homecoming sponsored by Bobzin-Swinford Post American Legion starting tonight and running through Sunday. A community band concert features Perry Friedman directing grade school bands from Frankfort Mokena Manhattan and New Lenox at 7 p.m. Sunday brings a kiddy and pet parade and a fireworks finale preceded by carnival attractions and an Amateur Softball Association tournament with teams from Chicago Heights Matteson Downers Grove and more.

Ann Rutledge School Bond Election Aug 19

Voters in Ann Rutledge school district No 56 C go to the polls on Saturday August 19 to decide a 69000 building bond. The addition would add two primary rooms remodel old rooms and install sanitation facilities to reduce fire hazards. If approved bids could be awarded quickly with work starting in September.

Spark Sets Off Gasoline Fire Burns Youth

Paul Dishman a 19 year old resident of the J C Knight residence in Frankfort was severely burned last week while attempting to start his car at the Leonard Pearson garage. Larry Hobson assisting him stepped on the starter as Dishman poured gasoline into the carburetor causing an explosion. Dishman spilled the remainder of the gasoline on himself and was engulfed in flames. Passersby removed his clothing and he was taken to Hedges clinic in Frankfort for emergency treatment. He was later moved to Silver Cross hospital by ambulance with burns to his chest back face hands and shoulders.

New Lenox Grade School Board Hires 2 Teachers

The New Lenox grade school board hired two teachers for Oakview School Miss Dolores Branchaw and Mrs Mary Louise Flory both to begin this fall Branchaw will teach first grade Flory will teach fifth grade The board also approved sewer line and sidewalk contracts with low bids from Russell LaSanska and Robert McElfresh and reviewed gymnasium work ahead of September opening

New Hours at Orland Park Library Announced

The Orland Park Public Library announces a new schedule starting August 1. Hours are Tuesday and Thursday 2 to 5 p.m. Friday 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The change aims to improve community service with evening Friday hours and a full Saturday day.

Open Bids For Grading On Smith and Bowen Streets

Open bids on grading and base course for Smith and E Bowen streets at Frankfort. Smith street work runs from W Bowen to Elwood. E Bowen work extends from White street to village limits. Bids opened at the Frankfort village hall Monday afternoon by men from the state district engineer's office at Elgin. Left to right they are H Wells.
