White Plague in Indiana 1909 Death Toll and Costs

The Indiana state board of health reports 4,479 deaths from consumption in 1909. Three thousand eight hundred sixty six homes were invaded, 2,180 lost a parent, 1,286 mothers and 998 fathers aged 18 to 40 died, 4,369 children under twelve became fatherless or motherless, 938 youths ages fifteen to twenty five died. Dr Mig estimates sickness costs and lost wages at 13,943,980 dollars.
