The public is informed that starting Monday May 14 1917 the 5c loaf will be discontinued and no bread smaller than 10c will be sold due to high material costs. Signed S K Jones.
Seven Francesville youths nearly agreed to enlist but refused to proceed with the U S military transport. Postmaster Walter Engle delayed reallocation. three unused tickets may be claimed by new recruits. Col V D Clyne auctioned uncalled for packages in Monon with a no reserve policy and minimum value of one dollar.
All churches plan joint services next Sunday to honor Mothers Day. A special program will be offered at both morning and evening services as the commemoration proceeds.
The consolidated school in White Post township hosted a last day program on Tuesday of last week. After an enjoyable program students and guests shared a large dinner on three tables. Teachers and hostesses were Misses Fern Riggs and Lanam. John Reed, formerly conductor on the Hoosier Limited between Chicago and Indianapolis, is reassigned to runs 1 and 2, with John O'Mara replacing him on the Airline.
Mrs. Phoebe Smith, 70, of Winamac died when her residence burned early Tuesday. Firemen found the widow seated by a stove with both legs burned to the knees, kerosene habit blamed by neighbors. She is survived by a brother in Chicago and a sister in Kewanna, Ind.
A local notice says bands perform every Thursday through the summer evenings on Main Street. Merchants plan to close for Decoration Day from 9 to 4, with some shops staying closed all day. The Business Men will contribute $60 monthly to sustain the project.
A Winnipeg Grain Exchange Council cablegram to the royal commission in London says over 90 percent of wheat will be sold to allied governments or Canadian mills. The agreement covers liquidation of May and July contracts and tenderable millable wheat at rates set by a joint committee.
Enlisted men slated for officer training camps will not be sent before May 20. Delays in designation allow regimental commanders to choose twenty five guardsmen from each regiment. The War Department urges selection of its most capable non-commissioned officers for the camps.
Answering the call, young men from Monon joined various U S military branches last Monday. The scene drew national sympathy as Cris Holmes, Frank Youngs, Rufus Winkley, Forest Carrol, Daniel Stout, Kenneth Gray, Ralph Burroughs and George Noyes entered service. Twenty five Monon residents have enlisted in 30 days with about ten more expected next week per Postmaster Engle.
Lee and Sanders traveled to Kokomo on Wednesday as part of a humorous recruitment push. The message urges action with the line enlist your dollar and a call to enlistment by the recruiting officer.

Governor Goodrich issued an appeal Monday to Ludiana sportsmen and the state fish and game department to cooperate in protecting birds and game. He argues preservation of song birds helps control crop destroying insects and denounces dynamiting fish and pot hunting of game birds as unpatriotic.
County Agent I J Mathews reports April 1917 activity including 398 general and 489 attendance at school meetings, 14 Boy & Girls Club meetings with 333 attendees, 7 demonstrations visited, 184 field days, 6 night meetings, 56 office calls, 40 phone calls, 36 farm visits, 78 letters, 2558 circulars, 2351 bulletins, 17 local articles, and 364 miles driven. He states reaching 1220 people, 96 calls for help, 279 enrolled in club work, banks loaning funds for pigs and seed potatoes, and expects local clubs to build community leadership.
Caspar C. Clark, now at Indiana State Normal, applied to join the Officers Reserve Corps but was rejected for being flat footed. Miss Myrtle Hudgeng and Ida Severns with Mrs Norma Brophey observed the flag raising yesterday among the Menon visitors.
Rural Newton county patrons played a one day game to donate all eggs laid on their properties to the local mail carrier. The carrier returned with his tin Lizzie packed to capacity with samples of hen fruit, a memorable gesture of appreciation and good service.
John F. Kopka and W. C. Richardson attend State Feeders Association at Purdue University and report on W. J. Jones of Sullivan County with a 36 ft 2 in diameter silo 78 ft high filled with corn yielding 80 to 90 bushels per acre. It will require over 300 acres to nest and a larger silo is planned this fall. Seven cattle lots on varied rations show full feed of corn cotton seed meal corn silage and clover hay as best, averaging 85.60 per steer.

Indiana University outlines a summer session with about 250 courses taught by 100 instructors across 24 departments. Highlights include physical education, home economics, vocational education, law, teacher courses, and a special week for retailers. Also offered are lectures, concerts, plays, excursions, gym facilities, and Red Cross first aid. Last year over 1100 attended.
