A birthday surprise party honors Willard Myers on Thursday for his ninth birthday. Guests enjoyed games and music by Creer Orchestra, with cream and cake served to many attendees including the Myers and numerous local families. John F Teeter’s farm residence and barn northwest of town burned Tuesday afternoon, about $6,000 loss with $3,000 insured. fire started from torch and coal oil while loosening a nut. town crowd tried to fight the blaze but the structure and equipment were destroyed.

The 14 year old son of Harry Ballard of Newland was bitten on the left hand by a rattlesnake while weeding onions for Tom Callahan Monday near noon. A Rensselaer doctor treated the wound and transported the boy to Tom Callahan's residence where he is recovering. Whiskey was not used.
A Lafayette state soldiers home committee met in Indianapolis and filed a complaint with Gov. Ralston claiming repetitive meals, scarce vegetables and fruits, insufficient eating time, and unsatisfied appetites. The governor promised the state would ensure adequate meals and time in the future.
Detamore's promotes a special Saturday with Glen Ale for Confectioneries and 1 lb talcum powder priced at 25 cents. Also advertised are Coca Cola cooling at Swing's and A. D. S. talcum powder 15 cents per pound.
More than 100 grain dealers and elevator owners from Clinton Tippecanoe Itrol White Montgomery Ben nm Warren Fountain and New Nn met in Lafayette to press for elevators to be regulated under the public utilities law. They argued the change will stop elevators from regraining for farmers and shrinkage losses reduce dealer revenue. W an Riley of Indianapolis urged action for the elevator men. The move is seen as causing hardship for local farmers who rely on elevator storage for forward pricing. Hiram Prior was arrested near Winamac on an affidavit charging him with passing a five dollar check to Robert Engle for a board bill, the bank having no funds to cover it. Prior had previously obtained $34 from Louis Engle on false pretenses. Engles will testify against Prior in Squire Graves' court next Saturday at ten.
Rev E Miller and wife visited Francesville relatives as Miller receives his first estate payout. A $900 check from the decedent’s bank deposits signals a 300 acre Ohio land portfolio worth about $175 per acre plus bonds and mortgages. Miller’s expected share nears $27000 from the wealthy uncle’s estate.
James W. McEwen, long time newspaper man, was taken Monday morning to the asylum at Longcliff near Logansport. Dr Washburn and Sheriff Hoover accompanied him. the family reluctantly surrendered him, hoping treatment will cure his mental trouble. Subscriptions due at Bill Street. Roy and Harry Priest, sons of John Priest of the Monon railroad, left Lafayette to build careers in Chicago and Oklahoma City. Roy advanced in sales for Harvey Chemical and later a furniture firm, while Harry, a Michigan Law School alumnus, practiced in Oklahoma City. The brothers acquired 1675 acres of oil and coal lands in Oklahoma and a 1500 barrel per day unit, drawing interest from a Tulsa oil executive seeking a lease on the holdings.
Seven autos carried Francesville residents on a Sunday round trip to Valparaiso and Gary, returning about 9 PM. The group included many local families and children. Weather was ideal and the trip was enjoyed. An agricultural agent warns of a fungal blight threatening Jaspar county orchards, urging immediate pruning and burning of dead branches to prevent future losses.

Ethan T. Reasoner a prominent Peru lawyer died by suicide at his Bass Lake cottage just before eight on Thursday morning firing a shotgun into his head. He had suffered mental instability for a year and discussed his condition with close friends. Earlier that week Martin Strasburger, 21, fatally shot his stepmother Mrs Frank Strasburger at their Bass Lake summer home and then killed himself, amid recent heavy drinking and insanity.
Several accounts are due now and should be paid at once. Other accounts arranged to be paid on September 1 can be settled between now and that time.
The Monon railroad offers an excursion to Michigan City on Sunday July 27 under the Jackson Club of Lafayette. The train reaches Francesville at 9 22. Fare is sixpence.
