J. P. Simpson a former Nauvoo and Francesville resident died at his Hepner Oregon home on July 2 after age related complications. His son Ray and daughter Sylvia of Monon joined family in Oregon a week before his death. He leaves a widow two sons two daughters two sisters one brother and ten grandchildren. All children were present except Sherry of Medaryville who was unable to travel due to illness.

Fatal Shooting at Brookston in Soft Drink Place
Ray Elston of Brookston was fatally wounded by ward French in a Brookston soft drink parlor Monday morning after a quarrel over drinks. French fired four shots. Elston died before midnight at St. Elizabeth's hospital in Lafayette. French, with a large family, is jailed in Monticello on a first degree murder charge. Elston was single.
