Miss Ada Peterson 46 a former Monticello resident died at her home in Indian Creek township near Pulaski last Sunday night from pericarditis after about a week of illness. She leaves her mother and brother Will Petersen. funeral Tuesday at Monon Chapel with Rev. J. S. Van Orman officiating. Burial in nearby cemetery. Also note Maxine Miller two and a half daughter of Dr and Mrs N L Miller died of diphtheria at their North Illinois Street home after a week illness. anti toxin given but she died. The Monticello Herald reports community sorrow for a child beloved by all.
Mrs Ben Tyler died at home after a brief sickness following the birth of twins. She leaves her husband and three ill children, parents, four brothers, and two sisters. The funeral at the Christian Apostolic church was one of the largest in the community with over one hundred machines in the procession. Burial in the cemetery east of town.
Lieutenant Weise of Leransport, son of a Pennsylvania conductor, writes from the front about brutal conditions, training aviators, and the belief that the war will end only when greater powers exhaust themselves. He notes the hellish nature of modern warfare, the toll on friends, and his resolve to stay in the air service until victory.
Sixty four guests attended the Grafton family reunion at the Lake side home of W. K. Grafton Sunday in honor of Joseph Grafton and family who had not visited in fifteen years. Attendees included many Grafton relatives and spouses from Lakeside Winamac Moran Beaver Logansport Winamac Manon and other nearby areas.
Leland Groves of Battle Ship Terry writes home from convoy duty between New York and France. He describes seven days at sea, ten days in port per month, chilly weather, a sheep-skin coat, limited spending money after insurance, and his relief at reading about submarine fighting being less frequent.
Installation of officers for the Py thian Sisters Lodge at Monticello was held last Thursday evening. A six o'clock picnic supper followed with several local lodge members as guests. Miss Ethel DeBries of Lansing visits Mrs. M. M. Maxwell and has passed the Red Cross Nurse exam. She will train in New York then go to hospital work in France.
Ben Tyler and relatives express gratitude to neighbors and friends for kindness shown during Mrs. Tyler’s illness and death. The note thanks those who offered assistance and sympathy.
Letters from Francesville report How ard Higgins son of C T Higgins Greencastle and Clifford Boulden son of Oscar Boulden met in France while Higgins served in the Marines. Their brief encounter occurred at Marine headquarters with plans for a longer visit on leave.
Five large packing firms Armour Morris Swift Wilson and Cudahy issued a joint statement defending their war time profits. They contest the FTC report calling it misleading and say profits totaled 140 million on over 4.5 billion in sales equal to about three cents per dollar.

Leonard Wentz of the Antic Air Craft Battalion in the American Expeditionary Force writes from France about life abroad. He notes the different scenery and prices, plans to meet fellow Indiana men, and hopes for letters home. He asks about Fourth of July celebrations and mentions the French and U S currencies.
Auginet Ro Han of Monon was killed Thursday while acting as engineer on a threshing engine at the Alva Thom as farm two miles west of Monon. He backed the engine toward the separator and the machine crashed into it, crushing his body. He lived about thirty minutes before help arrived.
State Council of Defense urges all Indiana banks to publish warned notices about unpatriotic stock promoters and to offer free counseling. Posters will be provided to bank windows to deter purchases of oil and mining stocks not approved by the War Issue Committee.
The proceeds of the Red Cross sale and Tag Day held last Saturday totaled 224 dollars and 22 cents. The Red Cross society thanks generous donors, the Boy Scouts for room use, and the senior high school for their generosity.
