Samuel Rea, president of the Pennsylvania system, told Detroit’s Board of Commerce that the country already has wide public ownership of railroads. He argued private ownership misdescribes current conditions and that citizens collectively finance and sustain railways through savings and institutions.
A general contract for the first unit of the James Whitcomb Riley hospital for children was awarded to State Construction company on a low bid of 311.00. The hospital will comprise several buildings with a total projected cost near 2,000,000 and will serve sick and crippled children of Indiana as a memorial to the Hoosier poet.
Wabash County surveyors will be paid five dollars a day instead of seven, under a county commissioners agreement. The maximum number of working days per month is set at twenty six, reducing the monthly pay to about 130 dollars from 182.
Christian Church announces Sunday school at 9 30 a m urged attendance preaching at 1045 a m and 730 p m with morning topic The City of God and evening topic A Trembling Judge the fourth in a conversion series. Welcome extended Christian Endeavor gathers at 630 p m.
Local notes report homemade candy at Dunns on Saturday evening. Herman Oaken traveled to South Bend on Monday. Mr and Mrs Leon Minnicus visited Monticello Sunday with relatives. John Hudgens returned from LaFayette Friday after a blood transfusion, improving but not normal. Pairs and families from Hammond spent weekend with Mike Tetzloff and visited Charles Volkner in Francesville ahead of Tuesday.
Mark Arnold renowned as an air devil returns to Francesville for an exhibition next Sunday July 16. He will perform the Flip of Death from wing to wing while dangling by limbs and balancing on the motor with other stunts for a large crowd. Tickets cost 3.00. previous engine trouble prompted this official return to prove the act.
Francesville business men announce a fall festival to be held in September with a focus on quality shows and a large agricultural exhibit. The exact date and street location will be announced later and the event will avoid low grade attractions and monstrosities.
New York and parts of New England enjoyed the wettest June in 52 years while Indiana faced one of its driest Junes. Farmers haying late in June struggled to cure hay despite excellent May and June rains. Oats look fine and potatoes and other crops are doing splendidly says Frank Babcock of the Jasper County Democrat who has just returned from the east.
A cyclonic windstorm swept Newton and Jasper counties on Monday afternoon, wrecking silos small buildings and trees. An electrical storm and heavy rain followed but the community reports very little damage overall. Since Monday showers have benefited crops.

Road contractor Theodore Reimschneider reports completion of the east end of the Star City Pulaski road and plans to haul gravel to finish six miles to Pulaski with a temporary side track and dumper facility.
An editorial urges Francesville to develop a local lime stone resource near town, adjacent to the railroad, with potential for road and concrete work, soil liming, and a large crusher. It predicts electrical power, employment of 50 to 100 workers, population growth, and spin-off investment including a garment plant, transforming the town through payroll activity.
Indiana Hydro-Electric began building at Norway, prompting Monticello to attract plants. The Young Ladies Missionary Society will hold a home made candy sale at Dunns Meat Market Saturday evening. Born to Mr and Mrs Norval Fisher, Thursday, a son. George Ent of Michigan visited his parents over the weekend. Mr and Mrs S K Jones and daughters spent Sunday in Walcott. Mrs J L Beesley and family traveled to Battle Ground for a several week stay. Dan Smoyer heard chicken thieves on his property and fired twice with a Winchester. no casualties reported.
Governor Warren T. McCray appeals to Indiana communities to donate cast off clothing to aid destitute orphans and refugees in Armenia and Bible Lands. Bundle Day is set for Tuesday July 28 near Indianapolis with fire houses and churches acting as collection sites.
Harvey Davisson escaped serious harm when his Ford was struck by a switch engine at the Monon railroad crossing on McKinley avenue. The slow-moving engine lifted the car about fifteen feet along the tracks before stopping. Davisson, seated in the car, emerged with a leg injury from slipping while alighting.
Promoters expect a heavyweight title bout between Jack Dempsey and Jess Willard. Ray Archer announced after talks in Wichita Kansas with Jack Kearns and Frank Flourney representing Tex Rickard.
Frank Nichols died at his Medaryville residence Friday night after a brief illness. His funeral was held there on Monday.
Mr and Mrs Robert Deiswanger return from a Canton Ohio visit. Mr and Mrs W A Wooldridge and daughter Ruby and Miss Laura Brinker of Winamac were in town Saturday. Miss Martha Hennegan of Chicago visits grandfather Harry Hubbard and aunt Miss Mary. Mr and Mrs Casper Clark return from Monrovia guesting relatives. Mr and Mrs Charles Clark plan to visit his mother at Clarksfield Ohio. Casper will manage the Clark grocery in their absence.
Indiana began a state highway system in 1919 focusing on connecting towns and county seats. By 1921 the highway program saw major maintenance and contract activity, with federal aid covering about half the costs as road construction faced rising prices and evolving materials.
John D. Williams reports for 1922 a program to construct 113.7 miles of hard surfaced roads and about three million dollars in type road contracts, plus three million for upkeep. Federal aid could cover half the construction, with Indiana's 3,900 mile system under patrol and frequent dragging.
George W Brandenburg was born in Warren County Indiana February 2 1858 and died at home north of Moron July 4 1922 aged 64 years 4 months 2 days. He married Alice A Lord February 28 1886 and they had seven children Samuel James John Rosa Nellie Maggie and Mary. John preceded him in death. He suffered from dropsical trouble and throat illness. The funeral was at the Methodist church last Thursday conducted by Rev J E Sidebottom. Farewell aged one thy glorious warfare's past the battle's fought the victory's won and thou art crowned at last.

Frances Scott manager of the Winona Telephone Company was painfully injured Tuesday afternoon when a telephone pole fell striking his shoulder while clearing wreckage after a wind storm. He escaped serious injury.
