Corporal Fred Hubbell of this place, gassed at Chatau Thierry and credited with 32 Huns, is noted in Statistical Bulletin No. 60 dated June 10 for taking first in the 300 yards rapid fire contest in Wehr Germany. Among 1400 competitors from four divisions of 120,000 men, he scored 50 to win.
Vernon schedules free band concerts on every Thursday evening all season. The Merron band, led by Dr T. Miter of Monticello, will perform for Monon readers, with sixteen members in its lineup.
A North Indiana venture plans cross country flights from La Crosse with an aerial passenger service. The operator, Mervin Headley, has purchased an airplane and aims to begin around July 10, with initial trips carrying passengers to Dayton, Ohio.

Henry J. Schultz, formerly of this county side and now near Winamac, was treated to a birthday surprise last Sunday in honor of his 41st birthday. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Fred Weltzin, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Malchow, Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Weltzin and families, Mr. and Mrs. Jno. Opp and family, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Dol and families, Mr. and Mrs. August Walters and families, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Rhode of Echo Oregon, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Grapentheen Peterson Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. William Depey, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Depey and children, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Jenkins and daughter.
Frank Frain and Morrow Hathaway bought a pure bred Holstein male calf and learned of high sale prices at Elma New York. The calf’s grand sire sold for 60000, a calf interest fetched 50000 to three Illinois breeders, an uncle sold for 125000, and the dam 340000. The dam had the world record for milk and butterfat yield in a year. The Frain Hathaway relatives were among 226 cattle sold averaging 33000.
