The twenty third annual session of Fountain Park assembly near Remington opens Sunday August 11 and runs to Sunday August 25. The grounds sit one mile north of Remington in a grove with water, conveniences, a tabernacle, hotel with thirty six rooms and over fifty cottages. A large crowd is expected as over one thousand people reside on the grounds for the sixteen day event. The chautauqua is a nonprofit educational venture run by local citizens for community benefit.
John Hudgens of the Crabbs Reynolds Taylor elevator notes a record payment last Saturday for a 55 bushel 10 pound load of corn from John Rusk, paid at $2.18 per bushel totaling $122.39. Another local load by John Saltwell junior brought $106.07 the same day.

W S Daniels of Knox, secretary treasurer of Winona Telephone Company, says over $2000 will be spent to underground wires and upgrade service. Monon railroad President Kurrie warns coal buyers to stock up now as winter traffic and car shortages loom. He serves on the National Council of Defense advising operators, railroads, and consumers.
State extension agent Jesse Miehbach states that a married man can not claim exemption based on his wife’s relatives' ability to support her. A Warsaw car crash left a young woman driver badly injured with serious facial injuries and a torn eyeball, after hitting fresh gravel near Delphi. she received first aid and was taken to an Indianapolis hospital.
The open season runs August 1 to December 1 as local sportsmen stock up on guns and ammunition. Hunters are urged to learn the law before hunting. Squirrels are reported scarcer this year. Dr. Ray Clayton of Fowler, son of Dr. Gico R. Clayton of Monon, has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps and ordered to Fort Harrison for training. He hopes to join Indiana troops bound for Hattiesburg, Mississippi, with other Indiana physicians at the St. Harrison camp after a prior rejection for wel nt but later reconsidered.
State fire officials report to Indianapolis that frame buildings in the town must be repaired to reduce fire hazards. One property owned by Mrs Emily Daseke with tenants J R Hayworth & Co and George Daseke may be removed due to high improvement costs. At North Judson two frame structures were ordered torn down.
A drunken brawl at the Miller home near the onion fields left John Adair wounded and hospitalized in Rensselaer while Tudor Rush stays with Snort McColly. Both men face assault and battery charges with trial set for next Saturday pending Adair’s condition.
Hammond police announced a crackdown on vagrants promising work for all. Last Wednesday eleven loafers were arrested, fined one dollar plus costs, and sentenced to sixty days at the penal farm. The notice also advertises a Fly Shoot one gallon for a dollar and local shop updates.
The Menon officials will apply for exemption from military service for all its drafted men under the conscription act. They cite the great need of workers at the shena to keep up engine and other repairs essential to the railroad operation. The draft list across departments may reach about 100 men, which would cripple shop work due to a shortage of expert railroad workers.
William Schelman returned from two Francesville area farms with his aged father Charles for a visit. He reports oats all shocked and expected 50 to 60 bushels per acre, Francesville's QGats sold at 60 cents, and Pulaski crops at least two weeks ahead of Porter county.
Monticello Company C has mobilized at the city park and undergone strenuous drills since Sunday to prepare for sending to Fort Benjamin Harrison. From there they may be sent to Hattiesburg Mississippi and eventually to France, signaling imminent entry into active combat. The Bangor Maine draft district reports a polite letter from a man notified to appear for examination. He thanks the board for the invitation but says after careful consideration he has decided not to enter the national army at this time.
Indiana University at Bloomington opens the fall session on Monday September 17. New classes tied to the war effort will be offered and possible innovations include Saturday classes. Regular courses continue along with military drill. Courses cover military science and tactics map reading topography aeronautics military law first aid nursing hospital garments and surgical dressings.
On August 18 19 Moose lodges of Indiana plan an encampment at Michigan City. On August 19 the Monon runs an excursion to Michigan City leaving Francesville at 10 34 am and returning from Michigan City at 530 pm. Fare one dollar. Frank Rees agent.
