In a Charlottesville setting a judge narrates how Tarleton’s raid on Jefferson nearly toppled Virginia’s leadership. Night ride to warn governor and legislature at Charlottesville

Jack Jouett, Charlottesville innkeeper, rode thirty miles through an overgrown former buffalo trail to warn the governor and state lawmakers of advancing British forces. He pursued the route past gullies, briars, and dense woods, evading danger to deliver timely warning as Tarleton's legion pressed toward Charlottesville.

North Pole Meridians Defy Time and Tide

Fragment from a periodical piece features a sea captain and midshipman debating the North Pole’s paradoxical geography and clock, concluding with a humorous note on endless plum duff. Also included is a children’s verse about Belinda the tiny cat facing a rat larger than herself and a brave, comic exchange.

The Ride of Jack Jouett in Jefferson's Virginia

A narrative recounts Jack Jouett riding from Cuckoo Tavern to Charlottesville to warn Thomas Jefferson and legislators of Tarleton’s approaching forces. Dashing ahead of redcoats, Jouett used a captured uniform to mislead pursuers, then reached home safely to warn Governor Jefferson. His heroic ride, memorialized in local lore, ends with his burial unmarked and his grave forgotten.
