Battle Over Pole Use Opens In Court
In a continuation of coverage, court proceedings address whether utility poles may carry heavy electric lighting wires. Company witnesses contend wires would sag and disrupt toll lines, while city officials argue the franchise should be read as granted. Affidavits from public works members and stockholders support the claim that poles were never meant for such use. City Attorney Colerick argues the contract must be interpreted as written, regardless of later developments.

Standard Oil Defense in Colorado Price War Trial
In New York on September 23 Wesley H Tilford treasurer for Standard Oil of New Jersey testified under cross examination that the defense will meet every point raised by the federal government in their suit. The witness said the independent firms started the price cuts in Colorado and that the reductions were caused by dwindling crude supply. Evidence showed Schofield Schurmer Teagle an Ohio independent firm was absorbed after input from its officers and not coerced into Standard's control. The defense aims to rebut the government’s long complaint. Also notices Bresnahan returned to the Journal Gazette staff and Mrs Heckler of West Wayne street came back from Chicago after attending a dressmakers association event.
