Aviator Robert G. Fowler's cross continent flight was halted near Alta California at 10 05 this morning by a fall that wrecked his plane and possibly injured him. He was brought to Alta with a strained back though officials fear internal injury. The machine is a total wreck beyond repair. Fowler reported a failure of the vertical rudder and said the craft spun and struck trees, injuring him but not scraping any skin. The engine remains sound as he contemplates rebuilding in three or four days.
In Portland Oregon on September 12 the flour market led a downward move while the wheat market advanced. Traders watched price signals as milling demand softened for flour while grain futures rose on the board.
Auburn Cal Sept 12 Robert G Fowler begins the second day of his cross country air journey from Auburn toward Reno He aims to cross the Sierras reaching 8000 feet and higher while facing cold and altitude challenges He plans to rest in Winnemucca Nev after about 292 miles of travel with beef tea and chocolate water on board.
Local tuberculosis fighters in Fort Wayne consider adopting a city stamp scheme to replace Red Cross stamps. National Anti Tuberculosis Association official E G Routzahn proposes local stamps to fund anti tuberculosis efforts with proceeds kept locally. A final decision, possibly at Thursday’s meeting, will determine whether Fort Wayne prints its own poster stamps next winter.
George M. Haffner was unanimously elected president of the Fort Wayne Retail Merchants' association at the annual meeting at the Commercial club rooms. Officers named include R. P. Hinman as vice president T. F. Kennerk secretary and I. F. Henry treasurer. The group backed railroad track elevation on Clinton street Walton avenue and St Marys avenue and appointed a committee to aid Bloomingdale residents seeking an open street under the Nickel Plate railroad. The association supported St Joseph's Hospital additions and local labor for the project. Frank J. Rahe received a vote of thanks for his service as retiring president.

Dr O R Spigler says he shot Mrs Lillian McCulloch to halt alleged blackmailing by the police sergeant's wife. He claims many prominent men have been menaced and urges a full investigation. Mrs McCulloch improves in hospital but has not spoken. Prosecutor Owens denies shielding any victim and vows thorough inquiry.
In San Francisco on September 12 John Hays a veteran fireman famed for ladder work and long leaps from tall buildings plunged from a height into a life threatening situation. Rescue teams responded. Authorities investigate the accident and his condition remains unclear.
Thief broke a rear window at the George Goeglein saloon in St Joe township Tuesday night and stole cigars and whisky but no cash. The criminal fled on a bicycle stolen from Dell Miller on Ridge road, using it to escape. Sheriff’s office and Deputy Barney Schonefeld investigated.
San Francisco reports the Lancaster battery at the Presidio scored four hits in four shots on a moving target at nine thousand yards. The target was demolished, and the exercise reportedly required postponement of further firing.
In New Orleans, Rev. A Gordon Bakewell of Trinity Episcopal Church has collected about $350,000 from wedding fees over 27 years as rector. He has performed 10,036 weddings with an average fee of five dollars, and officiated at 2,001 funerals and 1,099 baptisms.
Sealed records of the Indiana railroad commission show Engineer Patrick J. Malone's account of the August 13 wreck in which four people died and many were injured. Malone spoke to commissioners at the Lutheran hospital as he recovers, with officials insisting on secrecy until the full commission reviews his testimony.
Wilday A. Miller of Fort Wayne, a candy drummer for Sandusky Candy Co, draws a North Dakota land lottery win. Miller, 26, unmarried, lives with parents at 12384 Wells Street.
