In yesterday's state election the progressives and democrats defeated the Republicans overall. Allen M. Fletcher of Cavendish led gubernatorial candidates with 22 366 votes while Harland Howey of St Johnsbury trailed with 17 504. Metzger of Windolph and Fy Smith Morrisville each won their party lines in a closely watched race. Local tallies from 240 towns and several cities indicated strong mixed results.
Rioting inmates broke into the Jackson prison yard, freeing about seventy-five prisoners. Militia companies firemen and special officers arrived to restore order after a guard fatally shot a fleeing convict attempting to stop. Fires were started. inmates seized weapons and escaped through opened bull pens.

In Logansport Indiana on September 3 a 136 year old man named Jesse Gib son drowned in Wa heat Lewisburg east of Logansport. Emanuel William aided and a man named Gibson leapt from the bank to rescue a companion who was pulled toward a boat. The rescuer Gib son exhausted himself in the effort and was saved from drowning by Gibson after plunging into the water.

Four people killed and twenty six injured when passenger No 10 of the Chicago St Paul Minneapolis and Omaha railroad plunged into the Lemonweir river after a bridge washed out. The wreck flooded sleeping cars with passengers in berths as waters rose from a night cloudburst. Victims named engineer Ralph Thompson fireman Abraham mail clerk and baggage man Lee. Bridge washout caused the fatal accident. the train had been ordered back after washout farther on.
