Illinois Supreme Court Hikes Tax on Chicago Corporations
The Illinois Supreme Court affirmed a Sangamon County judgment ordering the State Board of Equalization to assess capital stock including franchises for twenty Chicago corporations. The decision targets valuation rules, holding the board improperly ignored debt, followed faulty procedures, and set grossly inadequate values, potentially expanding taxation to railways and utilities across the state. The ruling could recoup previously untaxed assessments and influence future corporate tax practice.
