James Noonan a merchant and coachminator at Huntertown marked his thirty ninth birthday with an elaborate dinner at his home attended by a few relatives and friends. The state records two executions at Clinton prison on the same day as Charles N. Davis and George Smith were strapped in the electric chair. Davis received 740 volts for five seconds then 200 volts for twenty five seconds, Smith later died. No appeals were filed in either case.
John Goeglein a well known Allen county farmer died last evening at his home in St Joseph township four miles from the city at sixty eight after long illness from stomach cancer. Born in Germany January 25 1827 he came to America in 1838 settling first in Ohio later moving to Allen county He owned a 220 acre farm and was a lifelong Democrat serving two terms as county commissioner He married Miss Otella Mess and they had thirteen children eleven living Joby Jacob Mary Henry Abraham Sophia Elizabeth William Christian Valentine and Daniel Brothers John and Georges Goeglein of St Joseph township survive He was a member of the English Lutheran church Funeral services for John Cox held at the Cathedral this morning and the funeral of August Baerwen held this afternoon at No 40 Oak street.
At a trustees meeting of the Church of the Covenant it was voted to purchase a lot at Pontiac and Clinton streets opposite Hamilton School. A 40 by 50 foot building will be erected after the holidays as the rear portion of a church to be completed later. Already $640 has been subscribed and prospects are favorable. The Presbytery had earlier refused admission and directed a mission be formed near Han street, but action was paused until spring.
