Terrible Sufferings of Schooner Crew in Devastating Hurricane
The steamship Merida arrived from Havana carrying Capt Cesar Douset and five crew members from the wrecked Schooner Moero which had sailed from Nova Scotia to Martinique. After a hurricane at lat 27 12 N long 54 22 W the vessel capsized and later righted, leaving the crew lashed to mast stumps for days with little food. They survived on scarce water, potatoes, flour, and molasses until rescued by the steamship Ayrshire of Glasgow on the 28th, about 1200 miles from Havana.
