Catholic Mission Board Plans Negro Education Drive
The Roman Catholic Church forms the Board for Mission Work Among the Colored People led by Father John H. Burke to raise funds and found industrial schools for African Americans in the South. The effort, sanctioned by the pope, aims to train rural black populations in useful toil and religious instruction, expanding Catholic education beyond existing Protestant efforts. Cardinal Gibbons and archbishops Ryan Farley Blenk join the mission board, with Burke describing the movement as a century-long dedication to uplift through work and faith.
