A large Boloman force ambushed officers, killing them during a fierce encounter with rebels. authorities reported a heavy insurgent presence and a sudden attack near the frontline, leaving lawmen overwhelmed by the surprise assault.
Washington reports confusion over a dispatch from Samar, Philippines, about Company C Ninth Infantry. Three commissioned officers Captain Thomas W. Connell First Lieutenant Edward A. Bumpus and Major Surgeon R. S. Griswold were initially listed as killed but later corrected. confirmation is pending.
General Hughes reports the Balangiga engagement where over forty from company OC Ninth Infantry were killed by insurgents at Balangiga while at breakfast. Survivors say officers were killed, and 400 insurgents attacked. about 140 were killed. Hughes plans to visit the disaster site and command troops. A new Katipunan branch forms at Tarlac with Marivale as chief, targeting whites, with police drawn in and widespread extortion. Guerilla warfare terms worsen in Tayabas and Bantagas, with insurgents hiding along roads awaiting action.
Formerly under General Cailles, the insurgent forces refuse surrender and retreat into the mountains. Main insurgent units are dispersed in bands across the province and dig up rifles when opportunities arise to use them.
Jury commissioners and the county clerk met to draw a venire of eighty jurymen for the Dunn case in addition to the regular panel. The names were kept secret until close to trial to prevent talesmen from learning of their selection and disqualifying themselves by public discussion of the case.
The senate sub committee on military affairs began public inquiry into Lt Cmdr EH Heistand over alleged misuse of his position in Manila hemp operations. Major Hawkes filed charges against Heistand and other officers, with Heistand appearing with attorney Charles Needham as the panel authorized the investigation.
Wabash through passenger train from St Louis wrecked seven miles from Council Bluffs Nebraska yesterday. The entire train left the track tumbling 18 feet down an embankment. The engine stood near Indian Creek bridge. Nearly a hundred passengers were aboard with three possibly fatally injured and sixteen seriously hurt. Cause likely rails spreading on the curve.
Atlanta, Sept. 30. Fire destroyed the soldiers home near the city. About seventy veterans resided there, several invalids were rescued with difficulty. Estimated loss is $25,000, insured for $22,000. The home opened for ex Confederate veterans on June 30 and was built by popular subscription.
Josiah King of 28 Will Street Jost lost $80 in bills Saturday and has received no trace of the missing money. King had an appointment with a friend to whom the money was to be shown.
Harry Bayliss, about 50, was found dead Sunday afternoon leaning against his mother's grave in New Haven Cemetery. A bottle contained whiskey and chloral, indicating suicide. He left letters and messages naming relatives and requests to be buried beside his mother. He was a former Fort Wayne resident and half-brother to Robert and Thomas Hammond. Burial arrangements handled by N. W. Bloom.
The Hibernian Rifles held a Sunday outing at Camp Reilley with a guard drill at 8 am followed by football. Edward O'Connor won the 150 yard dash, Longs defeated Shorts 12 to 2 in baseball, and Mike Lordier captured a greased pig in the final event.
Directors of the Muncie Hartford City Fort Wayne interurban hold a meeting next week at Cleveland to discuss opening bids for construction of the line.
Contractors will be asked to submit bids for the complete road work and for separate tasks including grading furnishing poles and ties and wiring. A 72-pound steel rail will be used and supplied by the American Steel company with grading operations expected to begin this fall.
In Canton Ohio on September 30 families of the late President McKinley doubt the theory of a dynamite plot or attack at West Lawn cemetery. Guards heard a shot but officials seek a full inquiry while rumors point to an accidental fall or personal differences. Captain Biddle later stated the sentinel may have erred and no struggle was found at daylight.
Russell Flagle thirteen, son of Mr and Mrs Milton Flagle of 87 East Third street, fell from a hickory tree near Shore residence west of the city while shaking nuts with companions. He sustained internal injuries described as very grave. no broken bones were found, but prognosis remains hopeless with the boy unconscious most of the time. He was returned to his home as the attending physician holds little hope for recovery.
A large audience attended the Abolt township Sunday School convention with address renditions by A Bowersox McMakin Rev J H Wingate Rev WW Clay and others. Township officers for the coming year were elected including president B C Clay vice president A J Hyatt superintendent of home department A Bowersox and secretary treasurer Baker Kennedy. The Hyatt quartet provided excellent music.
Guard De Prend spotted a masked prowler near the vault behind a tree. A second assailant struck him while another attacked with a heavy instrument. The assailants escaped into nearby fields as Lt. Ashbridge led a pursuit. no trace was found. De Prend would recognize the man if seen again.
The will of William McKinley was admitted to probate in Canton on September 30. Judge William R. Day and Secretary George B. Cortelyou were appointed administrators. They gave a joint bond of 100,000 for faithful duties. Appraisers to meet this afternoon to draft a schedule and assess property values.
The Knights of Columbus observed the jubilee proclamation of Pope Leo on Sunday afternoon by attending prayers at four Catholic churches including the Cathedral St. Mary's St. Peter's and St. Patrick's. They paraded from their hall in the Lau building visiting the churches in order and were joined by a large number of Catholics en route.
Steve Lawrence, lion tamer for the Boston Ferari show, narrowly escaped death at the Elks carnival in Lafayette Indiana after slipping during exit from the cage. The untamed lion Wallace lunged and fought through bars before the tamer was injured.
This morning the Fort Wayne Gas company received a large shipment of new telephone instruments from the Home Telephone company to be installed along the gas system. The telephone network will cover the 24s field and reach every pumping station, spanning about eighty miles in length.
Durbin Natal September 30 A Boer force of fifteen hundred under General Botha attacked Port Natal on September 26 near Zululand. The burghers were repulsed but sustained heavy losses including killed and wounded. several men are missing.
In Elkhart Indiana the Northern Indiana Editorials association elected officers for the coming year. Bridgeport Connecticut September 30 three men died and two were seriously injured in a head on collision of freight trains on the Berkshire division of the New York New Haven and Hartford railroad at Long Hill The dead include Engineer E Burns and Fireman Gustafdon of the northbound train and Brakeman Nally of the southbound train Both engines and many cars were piled up blocking all traffic Engineers Holt and Fireman Pitcher of the southbound train were among the injured.
Arthur Goebel of Kentucky and his attorneys returned to Governor Durbin in Indianapolis seeking a retry for W. S. Taylor and Charles Finley. The governor’s office indicated a formal decision would likely be issued today. The Huntington Democrat notes Mr and a son sat down with officials.
