A body of a woman was discovered buried in a shallow trench in the yard of a Spring Street residence. The finding mirrors a description given earlier by Wm. Walker, tying the death to his account. Police report ongoing investigations into homicide circumstances.
William T. Walker pleaded not guilty to murder in city court and was bound over to the circuit court without bond. He allegedly killed his wife Katie Walker on September 24 at 1453 Spring Street, then buried her body in a shallow grave while neighbors watched a morbid scene unfold outside his home.
An inmate died in the electric chair after a sentence carried out under legal authority. The execution followed appeals and court reviews, with officials confirming the death and noting the procedure proceeded as scheduled.

Cracksmen blew the Monroe State Bank vault early this morning but fled without taking cash. A six-man gang escaped toward northbound freight train as townspeople awoke. John Battes fired on the robbers with shots likely missing.
Henry Clay Beattie Jr confessed to murdering his wife as he faced execution in the electric chair at 7:23 am. The statement was issued in a hotel rotunda and signed by two attending ministers and Beattie. Ministers said the confession was the only public statement.
