Indianapolis lawyer Hon W A Ketcham is chosen as the new commander of the Indiana department G A R in its closing session. The event highlights his honored status and leadership within the veterans’ organization.
Hon. William A. Ketcham of Indianapolis was elected department commander of the Indiana G A R encampment in Fort Wayne after a tight race defeating James M. Barlow of Plainfield by 42 votes. Benjamin W. Skelton was named senior vice department commander and other officers were chosen for the council of administration and various posts. The encampment also selected delegates to the national encampment at Saratoga, while debates covered preservation of battle flags, monuments, and welfare institutions for veterans.
The Rocky Mountain News reports a Denver grand jury probe into land fraud involving major corporations and Wall Street linked figures. About 120 Secret Service agents are deployed in Denver, led by L. C. Wheeler, with potential indictments of multi millionaire captains of industry anticipated. Washington says Judge Burch and L. C. Lewis assist in the Colorado investigation with many officials involved and a large testimony volume, but names remain unknown.
Indiana state schools chief F A Cotton returned from Terre Haute after investigating charges that the city’s school enumeration was padded. He ordered a new count in one ward and will compare with the initial tally to decide if a full re enumeration is required.
A Calumet Electric railway street car at Ninety third street and South Chicago avenue was blown from the tracks by a torpedo. Indianapolis May 28 The supreme court affirmed Allen county’s ruling denying a coroner inquest bill for Grace Perrin who died two years earlier of appendicitis. The ruling affects about forty to fifty similar cases and could save the county several hundred dollars.
Congressman J W Fordney and F W Gilchrist with three sons Frank Ralph and A W of Alpena organize the Gilchrist Fordney company in Saginaw Michigan. The firm buys 50000 acres of timber land near Laurel Mississippi estimated to hold 400 million feet of logs and acquires Kingston Lumber's Laurel plant rated at 150000 feet daily.
Judge James A. Cantrill of Scott county resigns as judge of the Kentucky court of appeals. The resignation was accepted by Governor Beckham in Frankfort. Cantrill urges Commissioner John D. Carroll of Henry county to succeed him, and Carroll was named.

Indianapolis May 28 The supreme court ruled a city ordinance defining the business district to include only a few squares around the court house is valid for banning saloons there. It said attack is only possible if the city abused its power. The state may license saloons and deem the business lawful unless prohibited. A Thompson case for violating the Green Castle rule near Big Four station was reversed and a new trial ordered.
New York May 25 The failure to arrest Kas par Vartanian the Armenian priest whose body was found in a trunk spurs plans to form volunteer groups among Armenian elites in several cities to press the search. Police favor a lead involving a young Armenian woman seen with Ermojian, Vartanian’s associate, and say he planned to visit Hoboken to meet the woman’s parents.
Police trace a man matching Sarkis Ermoyian to Chicago after a watch is pawned on Van Buren Street under the name Sarkis Dermoyian. The man claimed Chicago ties including a former restaurant with his brother. He left the pawnshop hours later amid urgency to flee the city.

Indianapolis on May 28 reports the Morton monument commission plans to invite President Roosevelt to speak at the dedication on July 23 at the state house east plaza. Rev D R Lucas says the invitation will be extended though acceptance is not guaranteed as national guard units will be in town that week.
