In Honolulu on May 17 the scene shows calm among the public as political tensions emerge. Reports note the shift toward a possible replacement for J. Mott Smith and discuss the Theraton alliance amid a tense climate surrounding the deposed queen.
Reports detail a ten foot long tunnel dug beneath a cell wall by four inmates at Theda Prison. They used knives to dig dirt into sacks and hid them in the tunnel to escape to the yard where guards were few. Adams previously escaped once, and a pursuit followed after the break, with one inmate shot during the attempt.
The Plate Glass trust takes tangible form embracing four large factories in the United States. It includes the Diamond works in Kokomo and a Kokomo branch at Elwood Indiana plus Charleroi Pennsylvania and Crystal City Missouri. The Kokomo factory with 1600 workers is closed for inventory ahead of transfer. Diamond stock valued at 7 million dollars.
About 225 employees in the government printing office have been relieved from duty and granted furloughs. This marks the start of the usual reduction during the congressional recess, reflecting ongoing adjustments between sessions.

The road, 451 miles from Toledo to St. Louis, owes $9,100,000 in bonds with June interest due and unpaid. Attorney Robert G. Ingersoll represents the railroad company.
In Chinatown on May 17 a placard offered a $300 reward for the murder of Sam Lee, a wealthy merchant and leader of the Sam Yop company. Police removed the notices and the Chinese consul urged peace to counter Highbinder violence while Lee’s anti Geary Act stance and defense of a fellow Chinese arrest drew danger.
The Rio Grande breaches its banks at Regoroso and causes widespread damage across Mexican and Texas lands. Thousands of acres flood, cattle losses mount, and the Matamoras branch of the Mexican National railroad is washed out. A Martinez family of five, near the riverbank, drown, with reports of additional Texas-side drownings.
The lower house passed the Kline bill by 56 to 25 proposing hanging for murder proven by direct evidence. Reports from Indiana recount local incidents including misreporting at reform schools, Civil Service probes in Terre Haute, and a beer bottle mishap in West Fork that blinded a man.
