May 12 reports Henry Revels a colored man was hanged at Lake Providence Louisiana for the murder of Henry Hymes a white man. The same date Rome dispatches Archbishop Croke pledging future conformity to Cardinal McCabe on Trigb affairs.
In Shenandoah Pennsylvania on May 123 at Indian ridge colliery Michaell Neal was fatally injured while John McCormick and Jonn Fallon suffered severe injuries in a mine incident.
The Irish community here arranged for Masses on Monday for the soul of Joe Brady who is to be hanged in Dublin that day.
General Grant arrived with his mother's remains and was joined by Mrs. M J Cramer and James F Casey. Burial occurred at Spring Grove cemetery without ceremony. Grant and his sister then went to their old home in Clermont that evening and planned to return to New York tomorrow.
A group of eight men rode to Vaughn Hilton’s home near Jeffersonville Kentucky and shot him as he sat on his bed while waking, after claiming to hunt a horse thief. The attackers are unidentified but believed linked to the Barnett family in a long standing feud with the Hiltons.

Merchants Hotel in Napolyon Ohio burned at 2 AM, three inmates escaped, proprietor loss $2,500 on furniture, building valued $8,500, various insurers. The fire started from spontaneous oil combustion near a stairway.
Joe Brady was hanged at 8 in the morning after a rain shower. A large crowd gathered outside the prison as a heavy police and military guard kept order. Clergy administered the sacrament, Brady submitted quietly, and the black flag was raised minutes after 8. A mourning coach was kept at bay by authorities. Brady's mother visited him last evening and warned against any statement. Irishmen in Liverpool sent a wreath with grief. Brady gave no statement to officials.

In Harrodsburg Kentucky on May 17 the jury found Congressman Phil Thompson not guilty of murder in the Walter H. Davis case. The trial featured prolonged cross examination and witnesses describing Mrs Thompson as besotted, with details that influenced the defense. The courtroom erupted in cheers as the verdict was announced and Thompson greeted supporters.
In Cincinnati a petition by about twenty five liquor dealers seeks to stop the county auditor from listing Scott law taxed saloons on the tax duplicate. Judge Peck ordered notice to the county solicitor as the matter awaits hearing. The assessor reports about 2 500 taxable saloons and nearly half a million dollars in tax.
Paris May 15 At the Suez Canal company meeting on June 4 a proposal will be made to build a parallel canal alongside the existing waterway at a cost of 125000 francs.
William Joseph Hazlett was shot and instantly killed by E. G. Cook at 11 30 today in Vicks House Mississippi. An eyewitness called the act a cold blooded murder and the incident has unsettled the community as authorities investigate the shooting.
In Atlanta on May 14 a man named George Butner was found murdered. His wife was discovered standing over the body with a bloody knife and had been held for questioning by authorities.
Sullivan and Mitchell sparred at Madison Square Garden before 10,000. the English challenger was knocked about and failed to come to time in the May 15 bout in New York.
Dousaixn May 16. The trial of Fitzharrie the cab driver as an accessory after the fact to murder Cavendish and Burke concluded this morning. The jury returned a verdict against him.
Cuicaso May 16 The government of China will station two ambassadors in Chicago to look after the welfare of its subjects here. The move follows reports that Chinese residents in the city are much wronged. Authorities note about 700 Chinamen live in Chicago.
United States Commissioner Osborn said no warrant had been issued from Washington for the arrest of P. J. Sheridan and if one were issued it would likely be here. In Dustin on May 15 the trial of Fitzharrin as accessory to the murder of Cavendish and Burke began, eight people have been jailed over the Castle Island caretaker shooting this Sunday.
New York on May 15 reports Augustus P. Bruno, actor in The Tourists, faced court action by theatrical manager Michael B. Leavitt for flourishing a pistol and threatening to shoot. Bruno pleaded he was angered by Leavitt breaking an engagement without cause.
In Washington Delaware on May 16 the Western Union Telegraph company attorney promised to pay under protest the $1 per pole municipal tax. The council had threatened to remove polls if the company refused to pay, totaling about $850. Ashland Missouri May 16 a quarrel over whipping a child led a neighbor to intervene and was killed by a brick strike. the husband fled and remains at large.
The joint executive committee of trunk line railroads and their western links resumes freight rate discussions. A sub committee is formed to draft the rate adjustment details shifting rate making power from managers to a dedicated panel. Aimed at centralizing oversight among major lines.

Governor Porter selects Hon. E P Hammond of Rensselaer to fill the remainder of Judge Wood's term on the Indiana Supreme Court. Hammond, born 1835 in Brookville, studied law with A A Hammond, later governor, and served as a veteran with promotions for gallantry. He practiced in Rensselaer, served in the state legislature, and was twice elected judge of the Thirteenth district with bipartisan support.
The general synod of the Evangelical Lutheral church of the United States met in Springfield Ohio for its thirty first biennial convention with about 200 delegates attending. Rev Dr Charles D Hay of Gettysburg Pa preached the opening sermon on reformations from earlier to later periods and progress achieved. The convention organized and will continue for one week followed by the Woman's Missionary society.
A series of fires devastate Cape Girardeau and other towns with losses totaling thousands. Charred structures include a foundry, livery stable, and residences. Separately Kentucky and Louisville Democrats name nominees for governor, including Knott after votes maneuvers, with Hewitt and Pickett renominated for state posts.

Springfield May 17 The Harper high license bill setting beer saloon licenses at 150 dollars and whisky saloons at 500 dollars has been ordered to a third reading in the house after a hard fought session.
A Vienna dispatch reports the sultan will convene a Turkish parliament resembling the 1876 assembly. It will include representatives of all religions and meet in October.
Durban reports King Cetewayo led an attack against Oham and Rai bepu but was decisively defeated after a combined defense by the chiefs. Early casualty estimates cited 6000 but now considered likely exaggerated.
Joshua Franklin was found murdered near Mrs Girk's store two miles north of Fort Recovery yesterday noon with a bullet wound. Henry Young, a local blacksmith, was arrested last night on suspicion. No motive is known for the killing.
May 17 report states Henry Fleming was hanged yesterday in Pittsboro Calhoun county for a murder two years past. A large crowd witnessed the execution as Fleming remained calm. A pocket knife wound to the throat occurred as he attempted suicide at the gallows. the fall broke his neck and caused instant death.
A riot among Northern Pacific laborers in Gallater City prompted Sheriff Blakeslee and armed deputies to surround the town and force rioters to surrender. Leaders were jailed in Bozeman. In Hartford, the Granite State steamship burned at Goodspeed landing, with five missing or dead and extensive loss, owned by Hartford and New York Transportation Co.
Gaveston reports a cyclone struck the west side yesterday around ten. A small house housing James Burch's family was blown apart, seriously injuring Mrs. Burch and child. The Baptist church was demolished, while Andrew B. McMurtry’s brick residence collapsed, with Mrs. McMurtry and her mother buried in debris but not believed fatally injured. The colored schoolhouse and several other homes were badly damaged as fences and trees suffered. the storm lasted about a minute with heavy rain.
