The House opened the tariff debate with McKinley presiding and a sparse gallery. He aimed to close general debate by Saturday while Mills of Texas objected to the shortened time. The session included pension bills and multiple nominations as caucuses on silver continued.
Women elected to Edgerton Kansas city offices resign amid ridicule and criticism from male citizens. A special mayoral election is set for May 19 to fill vacancies, with expectation the resigning leaders may be re elected.
Several cyclones struck towns from Maryville Missouri to Norwich New York and Orry Pennsylvania. Homes barns and freight cars were destroyed or damaged. In Norwich thirteen bodies recovered with fears of more deaths. A Chenango county poor house fire killed thirteen inmates including several officials. Fire started by a pipe in the insane ward. Rescue efforts hampered by limited communications and damaded lines.
In Grinnell the case Steele v Verstraetten and others was dismissed after defense moved for a verdict of not guilty. The judge granted the motion since evidence showed only sales by an importer or agent in original packages, aligning with the U S Supreme Court decision. Des Moines May 10 Iowa report notes this first local application.
In 1888 county clerks and judges were convicted in federal court for election law violations. Last month the county court used public funds to pay their fines costs and attorney fees. Republicans seek contempt arrests. taxpayers plan suits to recover funds. Public anger runs high as countywide dispute erupts.

Advices from Illinois report a renewed effort to revive a manslaughter charge against Tennie C. Clafflin who is now Lady Cook. An Ottawa indictment from twenty six years ago alleged she caused Rebecca Howe’s death by improper drug use to treat cancer. The docket once freed was allowed reinstate.
In Dayton Kentucky opposite Cincinnati two nationally known families witnessed a sensational midnight wedding. Wm. E. Bundy, nephew of ex governor Foraker, married Miss Eva Leedom, daughter of Col. Leedom, in a brief ceremony that shocked society circles.
Montre al Quebec May 9 Rev Louis Martin ex Roman priest now Methodist minister has disappeared from his home leaving wife and two children. Rumors say abduction or return to Rome to renounce faith and pledge to Holy Father. Once in Wisconsin he left priesthood for marriage and led Protestant crusade. Wife distressed amid unverified sightings by nuns and Father La Croix.
New York May 9 It is understood that the wife of Fritz Emmett has retained Lawyer Matthew Hale of Albany to carry on her suit for divorce Col Ethan Allen formerly advised her When she decided years ago to obtain a divorce he dissuaded her Mrs Emmett came from St Louis It was a run away match Allen says Emmett has earned over a million in his profession but now has about 250000 in securities and a half million dollar suburban Albany place Pendleton Emmett's lawyer is out of town but a friend says an amicable separation is being sought Quincy May 13 Granite cutters strike ends A conference yesterday produced a compromise and the cutters will return to work this week Quarry men remain firm likely to gain their demands today
M G Patterson a prominent Decatur architect reappears in Salt Lake after vanishing last December. He reports being ambushed and robbed of 1500 dollars en route to Bloomington, then woke in a Chicago boarding house and later a Halifax hospital. He is slowly recovering with friends aiding his return to Decatur.
Miss Lilly Rosecranz daughter of Gen Rosecranz married Gov Toole of Montana at St Matthews church parsonage in Washington. The ceremony was private with Gen Rosecranz and a few close friends present. The couple will spend two weeks at the seaside before returning to Montana their home.
Dorsoir Michigan May 8. A Republican leader reports receiving a letter from M. S. Quay dated April 30 1890 in Washington appealing for aid to distribute pamphlets favoring high tariff. Similar letters went to Republicans nationwide.
New York reports describe four patients in a Jersey City hospital who overturned attendants, smashed furniture, and caused a hospital-wide panic before police subdued them. The item also notes wheat losses from floods and frost across Illinois and updated crop conditions, along with an advertisement for Hood’s Sarsaparilla claiming to revitalize energy and health.
After Kentucky Democratic caucus adjourned last night the factions renewed the fight at their headquarters as ground was reviewed and plans discussed. Delegates and candidates mingled late while changes of candidate and support emerged. Senator Anderson proposed a resolution pledging Democrats to nominate in caucus before any general assembly election to prevent Republicans from naming the senator, and a committee was to be formed representing each candidate to block an assembly vote until a caucus nomination.
In Chico California evidence of a double murder emerged as two Chinese workers were found dead in a cabin on the Sacramento river. A wounded Chinese man earlier told of a pistol shot from a partner over a contract and fled. coroner’s inquest revealed Ah Chung with a crushed head and Ah Loy with a fractured skull and throat cut, one leg severed. The wounded man is believed to be the killer, but he remains at large.
Ottawa May 13 The house of commons adopted a report finding Sir Frederick Middleton guilty of looting furs from the northwest rebellion. The militia commander will resign, with Edward Blake and Sir Adolph Carron denouncing his conduct and Sir John MacDonald calling for full condemnation. He was in Toronto last night awaiting the likely resignation.
Oxuanoma City I T May 1 Three farmers were killed yesterday in a clash with Chickasaw cowboys along the South Canadian river fourteen miles south of the city. Cowboys were driving cattle when settlers protested US marshals pursue the gunmen. International Prison Congress Pirrisune Pa May 13 US will have no official representation at the St Petersburg congress. Warden Wright of the western penitentiary received a Washington note stating no official delegation.
A large meeting of citizens in Manpan North Carolina protests plans to abandon Fort Lincoln. Farmers south of town say government protection keeps them on the land and fear of withdrawal would force farm abandonment. Resolutions express alarm at the military department’s intent amid reports of thousands of hostile Indians nearby. Similar meetings reportedly spreading in rural areas.
Canal boats have suffered a spate of wrecks along the western division. The James Stover, laden with jute, struck a stop gate at Carterville and sank. The James Stewart went down at Tonawanda with a load of ce.
The Mittie Fillmore lies at Lockport with four feet of water in her corn cargo while the Sarah sinks at Brighton with a lumber load bound for Albany. Both vessels are being raised as crews report salvage operations underway.

Lou Dildine, beloved wife of Frank Dildine of Turksen, aged 38, died at home after a long illness. Maiden name Jon Van Vleet, married nine years ago in Tiffin, Ohio. Funeral Thursday at 10:30 a.m. with services at the house, then interment in Pierceton, Ind. Pallbearers listed. Also features a visit to the county infirmary detailing 72 patients, their wards, notable inmates, and the facility’s improvements including natural gas and a self‑sustaining farm operation.
Mrs Mary Bauer died suddenly at 5 30 pm from heart disease at her home 13 East Wayne street age 63. Survived by a daughter. Funeral set Thursday at 2 pm from St Mary's Catholic church. Also reported: two months old son of John Vining and wife died of congestion of the lungs with funeral to be announced.
This morning Rob Jones of Force Street narrowly escaped drowning after falling into a six foot deep cellar excavation filled with water. Unable to swim, the lad was saved at the last moment by Engineer J A Keplinger who plunged in and brought him to safety.
The democratic city central committee last night elected Phillip Lindlay to succeed Fred Boltz as chairman after Boltz resigned to join the council. E. B. Smith was re elected secretary and I. Meyers of the Eighth ward became treasurer. Dr Henry C. W. Meyer, once a city physician, is under arrest for complicity in a frauds case against Germania Life Insurance.
In Breckenridge street a quiet wedding joined Miss Lida Boseker daughter of Christian Boseker to Frank E Drake of Chicago in a ceremony for immediate relatives. Drake plans to reside in Chicago after tonight as well as Hattie J Poinsett and Wm Knepper wed in Wayne township. both ceremonies by Pastor Northrop of the Baptist church.
The County Commissioners met in special session to open bids for bridges in St. Joe, Milan, Springfield, Monroe, Abite, and Lafayette townships plus two abutments for a St Joseph river crossing and a brick tower project on Glasgow Avenue. Iron bridges are planned with contracts likely near $20,000. At least twenty contractors submitted bids for the work.
Indiana city results show Republicans and Democrats trading control in multiple cities. Logansport selects one Republican and four Democrats to council, Madison Democrats win mayor and several posts, Noblesville fully Republican, Lafayette gains water works trustee and four council seats giving full control, Terre Haute Republicans win five of six council seats, Tipton and Washington vote Democratic, Wabash elects a Democratic mayor for first time, Goshen split mayor and clerk positions, with high license issues noted and Fort Wayne slipping to fourth place.
J B Howard alias Mitchell alias Scott was sentenced to two years in the penitentiary by Judge O Rourke in the circuit court for getting money under false pretenses from carpenters unions. He operated in several cities, stealing union papers and blanks to misrepresent himself and gain favors, with hundreds of dollars believed to be collected. Notable union witnesses attended, including A B Woodsock M M Haynes Foostal Speltz Walter Lambert and Henry Thein.
